The Philippines boxing contingent had to settle for another silver medal as Carlo Paalam faltered in the men’s flyweight final of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Saturday at the Kokugikan Arena.
Paalam was bested by Great Britain’s Galal Yafai, who went on to score a dominant 4-1 split decision to take home the gold.
Paalam was knocked down in the first round after a solid one-two combination by Yafai, landing a hard left and an overhand right that floored the Filipino boxer.
Yafai applied constant pressure and held Paalam against the ropes throughout the match, as the latter never looked the same after the knockdown.
Still, the Philippines now officially has its best Olympic medal haul ever of four medals: one gold (Hidilyn Diaz), two silvers (Paalam, Nesthy Petecio), and a bronze (Eumir Marcial).
