Gilas Pilipinas struggles, falls to Egypt in King Abdullah Cup opener

Gilas Pilipinas wasn’t able to overcome its offensive woes, suffering a 73-60 loss at the hands of Egypt on Monday in the 10th King Abdullah International Cup 2021 in Jordan.

The Egyptian side pulled away in the first half, limiting Gilas to only 24 points total to bag their first win at the Prince Hamza Sport Hall in Amman.

Amro Mohammad Al Halem led the African powerhouse squad with 14 points while Omar Saeed Arabei added 11 markers.

Ange Kouame and Isaac Go both had 13 points each for Gilas, which shot only 35 percent from the field and 4-of-27 from three-point area.

Kouame also hauled down 11 rebounds. Dwight Ramos made his return to action, contributing nine points while Thirdy Ravena added eight points and eight boards.

Egypt had more assists than Gilas, 21-15. On a positive note, Gilas did have a slight rebounding edge, 50-43.

Matt Nieto and Dave Ildefonso also saw action for the nationals after missing the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers and FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The Philippines will battle Saudi Arabia tomorrow.
