Meralco strengthened its bid for one of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup’s most valuable playoff incentives after cruising past Blackwater, 108-93, on Sunday, May 3, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Bolts’ dominant victory significantly improved their chances of securing a top-four finish, which carries the highly coveted twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Marvin Jones led the way with 26 points and 12 rebounds, anchoring a balanced Meralco offense that saw six players finish in double figures. His steady interior dominance and efficient scoring allowed the Bolts to seize control early and maintain command throughout the contest.

Meralco’s latest triumph followed another major win over Barangay Ginebra, reinforcing the team’s growing momentum at the perfect point of the elimination round. With consecutive statement victories, the Bolts are increasingly positioning themselves as a dangerous playoff threat.
Meralco’s top-four pursuit could dramatically reshape its postseason future
Coach Luigi Trillo praised his squad’s focus and urgency after another commanding performance, emphasizing the magnitude of the remaining schedule.
“It’s a testament to these guys, that they came locked in,” Trillo said. “Gives us a chance now to really put pressure and get a chance to get that top four.”
At 7-3, Meralco remains firmly in contention for favorable playoff seeding, with critical matchups against Terrafirma and Magnolia still ahead. Those games could determine whether the Bolts secure the postseason cushion that has eluded them in recent conferences.
“This could be big, the next games, if we can get the twice-to-beat,” Trillo added.
Chris Banchero further stressed the urgency surrounding Meralco’s push for playoff security.
“We know how important it is to get a top four,” Banchero said. “We’ve been on the outside for the last few conferences so to get to a top four would be a huge boost for our team. But we know that because we have that we can’t let our guard down.”
That urgency was evident after Blackwater briefly grabbed an early 16-13 lead. Jones responded immediately with a powerful dunk that sparked an 18-2 Meralco run, completely shifting momentum and allowing the Bolts to establish full control.
Meralco’s offensive depth, disciplined defense and ability to capitalize on momentum swings continue to elevate its postseason potential. If this form continues, the Bolts could emerge as one of the Commissioner’s Cup’s most dangerous contenders.
Blackwater’s difficult campaign continues as playoff hopes disappear
For Blackwater, the loss marked another painful setback in an increasingly disappointing conference, dropping the Bossing to 2-9. Their playoff hopes have effectively vanished, leaving pride as one of the few remaining motivations.
Robert Upshaw III returned from injury and delivered 31 points and 12 rebounds, producing a strong individual effort despite the loss. However, Blackwater’s broader defensive struggles and lack of sustained offensive rhythm prevented any realistic comeback opportunity.
Sedrick Barefield added 16 points but was severely hampered by foul trouble, limiting his impact during key stretches. His absence during critical moments further exposed Blackwater’s inability to match Meralco’s consistency.
While Blackwater showed flashes early, Meralco’s superior execution quickly overwhelmed them and exposed the growing separation between the two teams’ trajectories.
For Meralco, this victory represented more than another tally in the standings. It reinforced that the Bolts are peaking at the right time and could soon secure one of the most critical advantages in the PBA playoff race.
