“We’re very disappointed (with the Friday loss) but we weren’t discouraged. We know it’s not us,” said coach Tim Cone. “All the guys came out. Justin Brownlee put in 40 points and RJ Abarrientos 23 but it’s such a team effort especially in getting down on defense.”
The win lifted Ginebra to 8-3, tying Rain or Shine while improving its position through tiebreaks. It also strengthened the team’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup top-four push heading into the final stretch of eliminations.
Ginebra strengthens top four push with dominant response
Ginebra used the win to strengthen its PBA Commissioner’s Cup top-four push through balanced scoring and defensive control. The performance showed urgency after a previous setback and improved its playoff standing.
Brownlee finished with 40 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and one steal. RJ Abarrientos added 23 points and 11 assists, while Scottie Thompson delivered 17 points and 16 rebounds. Ralph Cu also stepped up with 15 points on five three-pointers.
The game stayed close early with Ginebra leading 21-20 after the first quarter. By halftime, it was 51-42 as Ginebra tightened defense and improved shot selection.
The third quarter decided the game. Ginebra extended the lead to 86-70 entering the fourth and never looked back. Rain or Shine struggled to match the pace and physicality.
Rain or Shine struggles as playoff pressure rises
Rain or Shine saw its PBA Commissioner’s Cup top-four push take a hit after losing three of its last four games. The team struggled once Ginebra increased defensive pressure and transition pace.
Offensive execution broke down in key stretches, and Rain or Shine could not recover once the gap widened in the third quarter. The loss placed added pressure on its remaining elimination games.
Despite the setback, Rain or Shine still has a mathematical chance to stay in the top-four race. However, the margin for error is now extremely thin.
Ginebra remains in control of its playoff destiny with one game left against TNT. The win keeps its PBA Commissioner’s Cup top-four push alive and strong heading into the final elimination games.
