Blackwater delivered one of its grittiest performances of the PBA Governors’ Cup, erasing a 15-point deficit with a suffocating fourth-quarter defensive effort to defeat Phoenix Super LPG, 106-100, on Wednesday, August 5, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Bossing overcame a spectacular 45-point performance from Phoenix import BJ Johnson by clamping down defensively when it mattered most, holding the Fuel Masters to just 14 points in the final quarter. The victory snapped Blackwater’s three-game losing streak, avenged its first-round loss to Phoenix, and improved the team to 3-3 in Group B.

Kentrell Barkley led the way with 34 points and 16 rebounds, while Sedrick Barefield added 26 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, to fuel the comeback. RK Ilagan chipped in 15 points, highlighted by a shot clock-beating 3-pointer that ignited a decisive 11-0 run and gave Blackwater a commanding 103-93 lead with just 53.2 seconds remaining.

Fourth-Quarter Defense Sparks Blackwater Rally

Blackwater entered the fourth quarter trailing by nine points after spending much of the game trying to erase a Phoenix lead that had swelled to 15 behind Johnson’s relentless scoring.

Instead of trying to match the Fuel Masters shot for shot, the Bossing relied on disciplined defense and balanced offense. Their pressure disrupted Phoenix’s rhythm, forcing difficult possessions while Blackwater capitalized at the other end.

Barefield orchestrated the rally with timely baskets, while Barkley continued to dominate in the paint and on the glass. Ilagan’s clutch 3-pointer proved to be the turning point, igniting the game-changing run that ultimately put the contest out of reach.

Johnson’s 45-point explosion ultimately went to waste. His scoring total was the highest by a Phoenix player since former import Brandone Francis poured in 48 points in a Governors’ Cup loss to San Miguel Beer last season, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Fuel Masters from letting the game slip away late.

Aquino Credits Team Effort After Comeback Victory

Blackwater head coach Patrick Aquino credited his players for refusing to back down despite facing a double-digit deficit and praised the contributions throughout the roster.

“Just happy, very happy that we had this win. This is a good start for the second round. Hopefully, we could push more and get some more wins,” Aquino said.

The veteran coach also highlighted the impact of his bench after turning to several role players during the comeback.

“I thank the guys, of course, they never stopped playing. Credit to the bench players because I had to put in Jed Mendoza, Troy Mallilin, Jack Dumont-Cruz, everybody. Everybody helped out. We contained them, we played good defense,” Aquino said.

Aquino also singled out Barefield’s leadership after the guard took over offensively in the closing minutes.

“I love what Sed has been doing, he’s being the leader of the team, he took over,” Aquino said.

Barefield, however, deflected the praise and pointed to Blackwater’s collective commitment on both ends of the floor.

“You know what kind of team you are when we’re getting stops, taking pride in our defense and just executing offensively,” Barefield said.

“Our coaches put a great gameplan together and when we execute it and we did what they wanted us to do and what they’ve been preaching to us, things are good for us. I think that’s what contributed to the comeback.”

The victory not only gave Blackwater revenge for its 92-103 loss to Phoenix in their first-round meeting on July 28 but also matched the Bossing’s total number of wins from the previous two conferences combined, providing renewed momentum heading into the second round of the PBA Governors’ Cup.

For Phoenix, the loss dropped the Fuel Masters into a tie with Rain or Shine atop Group B at 4-2. Aside from Johnson, only Ricci Rivero, who scored 15 points, and Kai Ballungay, who added 12, provided consistent offensive support. Meanwhile, Jason Perkins and Gian Mamuyac combined for just nine points after totaling 43 in the teams’ first meeting.
