The 21-year-old Filipina has torn through the draw in Washington, taking down a Grand Slam champion and the tournament’s defending titlist along the way. Eala’s route to the final reads like a highlight reel of scalps. She opened with a gritty three-set win over Zheng Qinwen before dispatching seventh seed Leylah Fernandez and second seed Elina Svitolina in straight sets. In the semifinals, she delivered her signature win of the week, taking down three-time major champion Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2.

That run — three seeded players eliminated, including a Grand Slam winner — has vaulted Eala into rarefied territory. She now has six wins over top-10 opponents this season, and a victory over Pegula would make it seven.

She has been candid about how far she’s come since then. “Going into this tournament, I looked at the list, and it was jam-packed. It was big player after big player after big player. So to be in the final really means a lot to me,” Eala said. “I’ve developed a lot in the past year, and at least in my perspective, I’ve been put in, to me, what are big matches, you know, more often than before.”

She’ll need every bit of that growth against Pegula, who beat her in three sets at last year’s Miami semifinals and is chasing her 12th career singles title — and second in Washington, following her breakthrough win there in 2019.

Whatever the scoreline, Eala’s run through a “jam-packed” draw, as she herself described it, has already cemented Washington as a milestone week for Philippine sports. A title would make it a historic one.
