A province once known for conflict is betting its future on competition. Lanao del Norte is preparing to host the first-ever Mindanao Youth Games from March 17-21, 2027, in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission, positioning itself for a dramatic transformation from an overlooked corner of Mindanao into a premier sports destination.

At the center of that ambition sits the Mindanao Civic Center Sports Complex, a sprawling 66-hectare facility in Tubod that already rivals anything in the country. The complex features a FIFA-certified football pitch, a World Athletics-standard track and field oval, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a 5,000-seat gymnasium, and dedicated venues for archery, tennis, combat sports and weightlifting. A baseball and softball diamond is also in the works, backed by the PSC and the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association.

“I think you have the best sports facilities in the country. Maybe you don’t realize it, but it is really world-class,” said PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio, underscoring the province’s untapped potential.

A World-Class Complex With a Storied Past

The Mindanao Civic Center is no newcomer to the national spotlight. It first hosted the Palarong Pambansa back in 2003, cementing its reputation as a venue capable of staging major national competitions. Now, with significantly upgraded facilities, it’s positioning itself for even bigger assignments, including the Batang Pinoy in 2028 and, potentially, another Palarong Pambansa down the road.

“People will realize that we don’t only host events in Manila. We go outside of Metro Manila, we go to the Visayas, we go to Mindanao,” Gregorio said. “The focus also is to develop regional training centers. When you upgrade facilities in the provinces, it’s an opportunity to host as well.”

The Mindanao Youth Games will bring together the region’s best young athletes, aged 18 and under, from all six regions of Mindanao to compete across at least 12 sports disciplines.

“This hosting is a dream that will become a reality for our province,” said Lanao del Norte First District Congresswoman Imelda “Angging” Quibranza-Dimaporo. “I hope our countrymen will consider and put our province in their bucket list. This is the land of beauty and bounty where you will find peace, and where the people are warm and hospitable.”

Turning Conflict Into a Blueprint for Growth

For Governor Muhammad Khalid Dimaporo and Congresswoman Dimaporo, the push into sports is about far more than infrastructure — it’s a deliberate strategy for peace and development. By channeling energy into competition rather than conflict, provincial leaders are working to reshape Lanao del Norte’s narrative and open the door to tourism and international recognition.

That transformation is already taking shape. The PSC has identified the Mindanao Civic Center as a future regional training hub for football and baseball, ensuring the complex stays active well beyond the Games themselves. The province is also investing in expertise, not just infrastructure: The Lanao del Norte Sports and Youth Summit, held July 28-29, brought together specialists in coaching, sports psychology, marketing and media promotion.

The PSC delegation supporting the province’s vision included Gregorio, Commissioner Matthew Gaston, National Academy of Sports Executive Director Francis Carlos Diaz, Sports Psychology consultant Prof. Karen Trinidad, Pilipinas Sepak Takraw Association president Karen Caballero, and PSC Chief of Staff Loujaye Sonido.

As the countdown to March 2027 continues, anticipation is building for more than just the competition itself. The Mindanao Youth Games stands as a symbol of transformation — proof that a province once scarred by conflict can now be celebrated for its resilience, hospitality and ambition.
