Gilas Pilipinas endured its toughest outing of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, falling 92-49 to Australia on Monday, July 6, as the Boomers completed the first round with an unbeaten record.
Missing injured naturalized star Justin Brownlee, the Philippines struggled to match Australia’s size, depth and relentless defense, suffering its largest defeat of the qualifying campaign. The loss sends Gilas into the second round in August looking to regroup after finishing the opening phase on a disappointing note.

Gilas buried by early Australian surge
The game remained close through the opening minutes before Australia completely seized control.
After the teams were tied at 8-8, Boomers guard Bryce Cotton ignited a decisive 16-0 run late in the first quarter, turning the contest into a one-sided affair. The six-time NBL Most Valuable Player scored 13 points during the burst, helping Australia build a commanding 24-8 advantage that Gilas never recovered from.
Cotton finished with a game-high 21 points, adding two rebounds, five assists and two steals in an impressive Boomers debut.
Australia’s defensive pressure overwhelmed the Philippines throughout the night, forcing difficult shots while capitalizing on its advantage inside.
Brownlee absence exposes Gilas
The absence of Brownlee proved significant for Gilas Pilipinas, particularly against Australia’s imposing frontline.
Without their veteran leader, the Philippines struggled to generate consistent offense and had difficulty matching the Boomers’ physicality in the paint. Australia shot 56.7 percent on two-point attempts, repeatedly attacking the basket and controlling the rebounding battle.
Tyrese Proctor added 16 points, four rebounds and four assists for Australia, while Mitch Creek chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds. Josh Bannan contributed a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds as every Australian player scored at least three points.
For Gilas, the defeat highlighted areas that need improvement before the second round, particularly interior defense and offensive efficiency against elite competition.
Despite the heavy loss, the Philippines remains in the hunt for a place at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, with Round 2 beginning in August. Gilas will now turn its attention to making the necessary adjustments as the level of competition intensifies in the next stage of qualifying.
