Far Eastern University nearly stumbled in its title defense opener. The Tamaraws escaped a stubborn Mapua University squad, 25-19, 25-22, 25-15, in the 2026 V-League Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, September 5.

The match was held at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City. Mapua pushed FEU to the edge before the defending champions pulled away late.

The Cardinals led 20-17 in the second set, threatening to even the match. FEU answered by turning defense into offense at the net.

Rookie Joshua Idong caught fire during that stretch, and his surge helped the Tamaraws erase the deficit. FEU closed out the crucial second set soon after.

New Captain Dryx Saavedra Sets the Tone

FEU’s newly installed captain made an instant impact in his debut. Dryx Saavedra led the Tamaraws all match and finished it himself with a clutch ace.

FEU needed just 20 minutes from there to wrap up the victory. Saavedra’s ace put an exclamation point on the win.

Saavedra finished with 13 points, built on 10 attacks and the ace. He added nine digs to round out a strong two-way outing.

Head coach Eddieson Orcullo praised his team’s improving rhythm. He said the group still wants to sharpen its serve-receive game.

Mikko Espartero backed his captain with a steady performance, posting 14 points on 13 attacks and a block. He also chipped in two digs and five excellent receptions.

Setter Rhodson Du-ot ran the offense smoothly all night. He finished with 20 excellent sets and five digs.

Mapua Falls to 0-3 Despite Ramos’ Effort

Ar-Jay Ramos carried much of Mapua’s offense on his own. He finished as the lone Cardinal in double figures with 19 points.

Ramos also added nine digs and 14 excellent receptions. It wasn’t enough support to steal a set from FEU.

The loss dropped Mapua to 0-3 on the season. The Cardinals face the National University Bulldogs in a rescheduled match Wednesday at 3 p.m.

FEU, meanwhile, keeps its title defense rolling. The Tamaraws return Sunday at 10 a.m. against the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Blazers.
