Filipino Icon Pacio Risks Legacy in Malachiev Rematch

Joshua “The Passion” Pacio has already made history as the most accomplished Filipino MMA world champion in ONE Championship history. Now, the ONE Strawweight MMA World Champion is putting that legacy on the line as he runs it back with Mansur Malachiev in a rematch that could define the next chapter of his career.

Pacio faces the dangerous Dagestani wrestling specialist in a high-stakes title rematch at The Inner Circle 21 on Friday, July 10, exclusively for members at live.onefc.com. The bout carries 26 pounds of gold on the line at Bangkok’s historic Lumpinee Stadium.

A Rematch Three Years in the Making

The 30-year-old knows exactly what he’s facing. Pacio and Malachiev first crossed paths at ONE Fight Night 15 in 2023, when Malachiev carried an undefeated aura, fresh off a devastating first-round submission victory over Jeremy “The Jaguar” Miado. Pacio shattered that invincibility that night, answering Malachiev’s relentless wrestling with elite wushu striking and an evolved grappling arsenal. He nullified submission threats, denied top pressure and secured a hard-fought unanimous decision to hand the Russian his first loss.

Now, Pacio believes he’s even better equipped for a second encounter.

“I believe I’ve grown a lot since our first fight. Not just technically, but also mentally and spiritually. Malachiev is a very dangerous opponent, especially with his grappling, and I respect that. But I’ve worked hard to improve in all areas, my defense, my striking, my composure,” he said. “I wouldn’t say I’m better in every single aspect, but I know I’m more complete and more prepared now. I’m excited to show that in this rematch.”

Despite having already defeated Malachiev, Pacio’s motivation remains sharp. The first bout was competitive, and the champion hopes for a more definitive showing this time. More importantly, he views this as another opportunity to represent the Philippines on the global stage and bring pride to his nation.

“Every fight is an opportunity to show growth and represent my team and my country. So it’s not just about dominance — it’s about performance, discipline and showing the best version of myself,” he said.

Legacy, Faith and a Hungry Challenger

Pacio’s battle-tested resume across multiple title reigns and high-pressure fights serves as his biggest advantage. The champion has navigated championship-level adversity countless times, a trait that separates elite fighters from contenders — experience that will be crucial against a hungry challenger seeking revenge.

Pacio isn’t overlooking Malachiev’s resurgence, either. The Russian has been flawless since their first meeting, rattling off three consecutive victories that include a resounding submission win over former ONE Strawweight MMA World Champion Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks.

“I think one of my biggest advantages is my experience at this level and my ability to adapt. I’ve been in many tough fights and different situations, and I’ve learned how to stay calm and make the right adjustments,” he said. “I also believe in my striking and my ability to control the pace of the fight. But overall, it’s about being ready everywhere, because I know he’s dangerous in his own way.”

As the division’s gold standard, a victory of this magnitude would only strengthen Pacio’s legacy. But his motivations extend beyond personal accolades or cementing his name in the record books.

“This fight is very important. Every title defense adds to your legacy, especially against a tough opponent like Malachiev. For me, it’s not just about being remembered as a champion, but about inspiring others and showing who really brought me to where I am now, and that is my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” he said. “God willing, if I can continue to defend my title and perform well, I believe that will speak for itself when it comes to my legacy.”

How to Watch: The Inner Circle 21, featuring Joshua Pacio’s title defense against Mansur Malachiev and Eduard Folayang’s return, streams exclusively for members at live.onefc.com on Friday, July 10, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Philippine Standard Time, broadcasting live to over 195 countries around the globe.
