Alex Eala delivered another statement victory on the WTA Tour after defeating reigning Queen’s Club champion Donna Vekic, 7-5, 6-4, in the opening round of the Berlin Tennis Open on Wednesday, June 17. The 21-year-old Filipina showcased composure under pressure to eliminate one of the tour’s most in-form players and secure her place in the second round.
Eala repeatedly produced her best tennis in crucial moments, saving 12 of 14 break points while firing eight aces during an outstanding serving display. The victory also improved her perfect head-to-head record against Vekic to 2-0 after previously defeating the Croatian in Auckland earlier this year.

Eala Thrives Under Pressure
The opening set featured several momentum swings as both players traded breaks and extended rallies. Vekic appeared poised to seize early control after earning the first break, but Eala responded immediately by breaking back before stringing together four consecutive games to move ahead.
The Croatian mounted another comeback to level the contest and briefly take the advantage, but Eala remained composed during the closing stages of the set. Aggressive baseline play and confident shot-making allowed the Filipina to earn another crucial break before serving out the opener.
Eala carried that momentum into the second set by winning five consecutive games spanning both sets to establish a 2-0 advantage. Although play was briefly interrupted because of a medical incident involving a spectator, the delay did little to disrupt the Filipina’s focus.
With Vekic pushing hard to force a deciding set, Eala faced four break points while serving for the match at 5-4. She responded with fearless tennis, saving every opportunity before sealing the victory with three consecutive unreturned serves to complete one of her strongest performances of the season.
Rybakina Awaits Next
Following the match, Eala credited her fighting spirit for helping her withstand Vekic’s late charge.
“I told myself that she’s fighting back, but I’m also a fighter,” Eala said during her on-court interview.
“So I have to try — I have to try and give her a hard time. You know Donna is an incredible player, and she’s been showcasing it a lot lately. Every time I play her it’s been very difficult. I had a lot of expectations for this match in terms of the level I had to bring,” she added.
The victory sends Eala into a highly anticipated second-round showdown against second seed Elena Rybakina. The match will serve as a rematch of their meeting in Rome earlier this season, where the former Wimbledon champion advanced in straight sets.
Elsewhere in Berlin, 20-year-old Nikola Bartunkova continued the tournament’s youth movement by defeating Elise Mertens in straight sets to book a quarterfinal meeting against top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
