Moments after unleashing the crosscourt kill that sealed a hard-fought victory, the Akari star collapsed flat on her back, not from injury but from sheer exhaustion, capping a physically and emotionally draining four-set battle that saw the Chargers outlast Choco Mucho, 27-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-22, in the PVL On Tour at the Polomolok Gymnasium in South Cotabato on Saturday, August 1.

The two-hour, 18-minute war tested more than skill — it tested endurance and mental toughness, with Akari surviving two marathon opening sets before shaking off a third-set stumble to close out the match the hard way.

Tagaod’s Exhaustion Tells the Story of a Grueling Win

Tagaod led all scorers with 19 points, but her true impact was measured in more than just the box score. After playing nearly every point of the punishing four-set battle, the physical toll finally caught up with her the instant the ball hit the floor for good, a fitting image for a Chargers squad that emptied the tank from start to finish.

Ivy Lacsina provided steady support with 14 points, while Grethcel Soltones added 10. Faith Nisperos and Jamaica Villena chipped in nine and seven points, respectively, rounding out a balanced offensive effort that helped Akari survive Choco Mucho’s push.

The Flying Titans actually held the edge in attacks, 55-47, behind four players who reached double figures — Mean Mendrez and Viray each scored 16, while Madayag and Jewel Encarnacion added 14 and 11. But Akari controlled the game at the net, dominating the blocking battle 17-11, including six rejections from Tagaod alone.

The win more than made up for Akari’s four-set defeat to ZUS Coffee in its tournament opener in Isabela on July 8. The nearly month-long layoff between matches appeared to give the Chargers ample time to regroup and correct the flaws that surfaced in that setback.

Choco Mucho’s Shorthanded Squad Refuses to Fold

Playing without national team standouts Eya Laure, Dawn Catindig and Sisi Rondina, along with regulars Isa Molde, Kat Tolentino and Deanna Wong, Choco Mucho suffered its third straight loss. Still, the shorthanded Flying Titans put up a gallant fight, offering a glimpse of their potential once the roster returns to full strength.

The first two sets were a showcase of grit from both sides, with neither team willing to cede momentum. Choco Mucho repeatedly threatened to seize control, but Akari found poise in the closing stretches, capitalizing on key plays to escape with back-to-back extended-set wins.

Refusing to fold, the Flying Titans roared back in the third set behind veteran middle blocker Madayag, whose string of clutch quick attacks — punctuated by a fiery conversion and a memorable stare-down — injected fresh intensity into the match. Lorraine Pecaña complemented her with well-timed quick hits through the middle, helping Choco Mucho dictate tempo and build a comfortable cushion.

Akari trimmed a 16-21 deficit using the league’s “premium ball,” a special play worth two points, but Choco Mucho held firm after a costly Akari catch-and-throw violation stalled the rally. Ayesha Juegos then sealed the set with a rejection of Lacsina’s attack, forcing a decisive fourth frame.

Whatever momentum Choco Mucho carried evaporated quickly in the fourth set. Akari stormed to an 8-2 lead behind a Villena service ace and built a commanding 13-7 cushion under coach Tina Salak’s rotations. Choco Mucho clawed back to tie the score at 14 and again at 19 behind Madayag and Viray, but Lacsina answered with a crucial two-handed dump off a Choco Mucho overpass to swing momentum back to the Chargers for good.

Akari closed out the match by winning five of the final eight points, completing a triumph built on equal parts grit, depth and sheer will to finish.
