PH Youth Volleyball Stars Bring No-Fear Mindset to Chile

Size doesn’t matter when heart is this big. Alas Pilipinas Girls are set to leave for Chile this week, carrying zero fear into the biggest challenge of their young careers as they prepare to battle the world’s top volleyball nations at the FIVB Volleyball Girls U17 World Championship.

The Philippine youth squad will test itself against traditional volleyball powers in the August 6 to 16 tournament, riding a wave of confidence built from its breakthrough qualification run in the Asian Volleyball Confederation Women’s U16 Championship. Backed by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission, the young Filipinas insist they’re heading into the tournament with nothing to lose and everything to prove.

A Fearless Approach Against Volleyball Powers

For a squad about to face some of the sport’s most storied programs, confidence is the name of the game.

“Pare-parehas lang po kami nagttrating at magkaka-aga lang kami, so dapat wag kami matakot at ipakita lang naming kung ano pong meron sa team,” said UST standout Megan Hernandez, capturing the squad’s mindset heading into the tournament.

Leading scorer Xyz Rayco, who was a standout performer in the AVC U16 Championship, echoed that same fighting spirit.

“Kailangan ipakita namin na palaban kami,” Rayco said.

Assistant coach Oliver Balse believes that despite the height disadvantage the Filipinas may face against bigger international opponents, skill and preparation can level the playing field.

“Sa age-group, kahit ibang lahi, pare-pareho pa. Merong taller players of course, but skills makakatapat tayo sa kanila,” Balse said.

Stacked Pool B Awaits Talented PH Roster

The Philippines has been drawn into a loaded Pool B alongside China, Mexico, Peru, Tunisia and Venezuela, a group that will immediately put the young squad’s no-fear approach to the test.

The roster is stacked with rising talent from across the country. National University contributes Khaira Manzano, Irish May Mahinay, Frances Dianne Ramos and Jhaynna Bulandres, while Bacolod Tay Tung’s Madele Gale, King’s Montessori School’s Sharina Lleses, and St. John’s Institute’s Caera Celis round out the depth. Ateneo adds Resty Jane Olaguir and Jhenica Sadia, while UST’s Taj Arkhea Teves, Leyte National High School’s Nadeth Herbon and San Felipe Neri Catholic School’s Jello Andrea Mauricio complete the squad.

Elsewhere in the bracket, host Chile headlines Pool A alongside Czechia, Egypt, Thailand, Turkiye and the United States. Pool C features Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, Spain, Japan and Poland, while Italy and Korea lead Pool D, which also includes Algeria, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Chinese Taipei.

With the world watching, Alas Pilipinas Girls are ready to show that fearlessness — not height — will define their World Championship debut.
