‘First Step Pa Lang Ito’: Sophia Novino’s Tearful Silver Is the Most Inspiring Moment of the Asia-Oceania Sambo Championships

She cried after the loss — and then she found out exactly who she had just fought, and those tears started to mean something entirely different.

Seventeen-year-old Sophia Nicole Novino had no idea that the opponent who pinned her down with 24 seconds left in their four-minute bout was Karakat Rakhybay, a back-to-back world youth silver medalist from Kazakhstan. She found out afterward. And in that moment, the silver medal hanging around the neck of the Pinoy rookie stopped looking like a consolation prize and started looking like a prophecy.

Novino fell to Rakhybay in the women’s youth -47kg finals of the 11th Asia-Oceania Sambo Championships, presented by the Philippine Sports Commission and held at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. It was her first major international meet. She went toe-to-toe with one of the best young grapplers in the world, fought to a 1-all standoff early, and only surrendered when her more experienced opponent forced the tap with less than half a minute to go. For a 17-year-old making her sambo debut on the international stage, it was nothing short of extraordinary.

A Rookie Who Refused to Be Rattled

What made Novino’s performance so striking wasn’t just the result — it was the fearlessness. A UE judo varsity campaigner who is still relatively new to sambo, she stepped onto the mat at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium against Rakhybay — a two-time world medalist from the 2024 edition in Larnaca, Cyprus, and the 2025 edition in Bogor, Indonesia — and never blinked.

When it was over, the tears came. But so did the perspective.

“Hindi lang po ito malaking news sa akin pero malaking learning po,” Novino said. “Pero at least nakakuha rin ako ng isang point sa isang magaling na kalaban. First step pa lang ito at hindi ako susuko.”

National sambo team coach Jerry Legaspi made no effort to hide his pride.

“This is her first major sambo international tournament but Sophia did very well. Maganda ang ipinakita niya against a very strong opponent. She put on a good show so I am proud of her,” Legaspi said. “She is relatively new to the sport so naninibago pa coming from a judo background, but she will learn from this experience and definitely will do better next time.”

Novino’s silver was the single best individual finish for the host Philippines, who had already collected three bronze medals on the opening day of competition organized by the Pilipinas Sambo Federation Inc. and held under the aegis of the National Sports Tourism Inter-agency Committee, led by PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio.

Philippines Builds Its Medal Haul — and Eyes More Gold

The Philippine contingent didn’t stop at Novino’s silver. Three additional bronzes were added to the national medal collection from Johan Matthew San Miguel, Daniel Justin Virtudazo, and Julian Henry Flores in junior men’s combat sambo in the -58kg, -88kg, and -98kg classes, respectively — bringing the total haul to one silver and six bronzes through the first two days of the four-day tournament, backed by Victory Liner.

Next up for the Philippines is defending women’s sport sambo +80kg division champion Sydney Sy — the squad’s top gold medal bet — who is set to see action in the coming rounds.

For Novino, the scoreboard will show a silver. But what she’s carrying out of that stadium is bigger than any medal — it’s the unshakable knowledge that she belongs, and that this is only the beginning.
