Team Philippines continues to expand its roster for the Nagoya-Aichi 20th Asian Games after six modern pentathlon athletes secured qualification, further strengthening the country’s campaign ahead of the September competition. The development adds more depth to an already growing delegation as multiple sports continue to deliver qualified athletes for the continental event.
The latest update reflects a steady rise in Filipino qualifiers across different disciplines, signaling stronger overall momentum for the national campaign. With preparations intensifying, the Philippines is gradually building a more competitive lineup aimed at improving its previous Asian Games performance.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino confirmed the new qualifications and described them as another encouraging sign for the country’s buildup. He emphasized that more opportunities are opening for Filipino athletes as the program progresses.
“We got the email from the organizers about the qualification of six modern pentathlon athletes and that’s another good news for our campaign,” Tolentino said. “The opportunities to do better in Nagoya and Aichi continues to grow wider.”
The Philippines is targeting an improved finish compared to the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, where it earned four gold, two silver, and 12 bronze medals. Sports officials believe that a deeper and more diverse roster could significantly boost medal chances.
Tolentino also highlighted key athletes expected to lead the campaign, including Carlos Yulo and EJ Obiena. Their presence is seen as central to the country’s medal aspirations in the upcoming competition.
“We’re hoping that more of our athletes will qualify for the Asian Games, where the competitions have gotten close to the level of the Olympics,” he said.
Modern pentathlon strengthens Asian Games campaign
The addition of six modern pentathlon qualifiers provides another boost to Team Philippines as its Asian Games roster continues to grow across multiple sports. This steady expansion reflects the country’s improving competitiveness at the continental level.
In recent weeks, two taekwondo athletes in poomsae and kyorugi also secured qualification, further strengthening the country’s combat sports lineup. Their inclusion adds to a broader push for representation in multiple disciplines.
Team sports have also contributed to the growing delegation, with both the men’s and women’s indoor volleyball teams earning spots in the Asian Games. Women’s beach volleyball had earlier secured its qualification through international competition.
Tolentino said the continued rise in qualifiers reflects the improving strength and depth of Philippine sports on the international stage. He added that sustained development efforts are beginning to show results across different sports programs.
Growing Asian Games delegation momentum
As preparations continue toward Nagoya-Aichi 2026, Team Philippines is seeing consistent growth in its roster, with more athletes expected to secure qualification in the coming weeks. This steady increase is shaping a stronger and more balanced delegation.
Officials believe the expanding pool of qualified athletes could translate into improved performance compared to previous Asian Games campaigns. The country’s growing representation across multiple sports is seen as a key advantage heading into the competition.
