The Philippine beach volleyball teams are set for difficult group-stage assignments as the 6th Asian Beach Games open in Sanya Bay, China. Competition begins Thursday, and both women’s pairs immediately face strong regional opposition in tightly contested pools.
Sunny Villapando and Grydelle Joanice Matibag, seeded ninth in the 28-team women’s field, were drawn in Pool H alongside Mongolia, Macau, and Kazakhstan. Khylem Progella and Sofia Pagara, ranked 10th, will compete in Pool G against Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Macau. Both teams will need strong starts to advance into the knockout rounds.

Tough group-stage assignments for Philippine pairs
The draw places both Philippine teams in highly competitive pools where early wins will be crucial for survival in the tournament. Each match carries weight, as only the top two teams per group advance to the knockout phase.
The format increases pressure from the opening matches, requiring consistency and fast adaptation against different playing styles.
AVC highlights development role of the tournament
The beach volleyball competition features eight pools each in the men’s and women’s divisions, with the top two teams advancing to the next stage. The structure ensures an intense group phase where every result matters.
The Asian Volleyball Confederation said the Asian Beach Games serve as an important platform for developing beach volleyball talent across the continent. AVC president Ramon “Tats” Suzara said the event reflects ongoing efforts to elevate the sport’s level and competitiveness in Asia.
Suzara added that the Games help prepare athletes for future international competitions, including Olympic qualification pathways toward Los Angeles 2028. Around 1,790 athletes from 45 countries are competing in the Games, which officially opened in Sanya.
Strong contenders from China, Japan, and other Asian nations are also participating across multiple events in the competition. The Philippines does not have an entry in the men’s beach volleyball tournament, which includes 35 teams.
Organizers confirmed that preparations are complete and venues are ready as matches begin in Sanya Bay.
