Surfers from 24 nations have flocked to Urbiztondo Beach for the World Surf League La Union International Pro, a high-stakes qualifier for the 2026 Longboard Tour. Nearly 120 longboarders are vying for just two spots per gender, with experienced professionals and rising stars competing side by side. The event promises intense matchups as athletes navigate La Union’s challenging waves.
PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio highlighted the importance of hosting major surf events across the Philippines. “From Siargao to Baler and now La Union, these competitions showcase our best surfing destinations,” Gregorio said. He added that events like this not only promote the Philippines internationally but also encourage athletes to explore new surf locations nationwide.
Gregorio noted that the La Union International Pro also strengthens local tourism and the economy. “We aim to make this even bigger in the years ahead,” he said. By hosting international competitions, the Philippines positions itself as a hub for sports tourism, giving surfers and fans an unforgettable experience.

Top international and local contenders
Among the top international surfers are 2025 runner-up Natsumi Taoka (JPN), two-time world champion Phil Rajzman (BRA), Ben Skinner (GBR), and Katlin Mikkelsen (USA). They will face stiff competition from Filipino surfers led by hometown hero Rogelio Jr. Esquievel, World No. 8 and undefeated three-time champion of the event. Other local contenders include Daisy Dela Torre, Roger Casogay, Mara Lopez, and 2025 rookie Jomarie Ebueza.
Esquievel emphasized the value of local knowledge. “When the waves get tricky, understanding the surf makes a huge difference,” he said. New Zealand’s Jack Tyro, a rising longboard talent, is also competing for his first Longboard Tour berth. Tour standouts António Dantas (POR), Ginger Caimi (ITA), and siblings Taka and Kaede Inoue (JPN) bring veteran experience, while newcomers Mare Robroch (NDL), Noah Hogle (USA), Alana Johnson (HAW), and Raony Portilla (FRA) aim to make a mark.
Rising opportunities for Philippine surfers
For local competitors, the event is both a test and a chance to shine on the global stage. Filipino surfers benefit from their familiarity with the waves while learning from international techniques and strategies. Each heat challenges timing, wave selection, and execution, providing invaluable experience for the Longboard Tour and beyond.
The La Union International Pro is more than a competition; it is a showcase of talent, strategy, and perseverance. Fans witness thrilling action, while the local community enjoys increased tourism and global attention. This event solidifies Urbiztondo Beach as a world-class surfing destination.
