Siargao’s Noah Arkfeld chases global surfing dreams after Cloud 9 breakthrough

Growing up in Siargao, Noah Arkfeld learned to chase waves before most kids learned balance. Now 21, the homegrown standout has turned that early passion into a full-throttle pursuit of surfing greatness, emerging as one of the Philippines’ brightest hopes on the international stage.

Arkfeld cemented his status as a rising force when he topped the national rankings in 2022, building on a breakout victory in his hometown. But for the Cloud 9 regular, this journey is only beginning — and the horizon is global.

He recently competed at the 2025 Siargao International Surfing Cup Qualifying Series 6000, the highest-rated WSL qualifier to ever hit Philippine shores. The event, hosted at the iconic Cloud 9 reef break, drew elite surfers from across the world chasing points, prestige, and momentum.

“It’s always special competing here,” Arkfeld said. “Siargao has shaped me as a surfer. The energy, the waves, the culture — this place pushes you to aim higher.”

Chasing the WSL Challenger Series

Raised by an American father and Filipina mother, Arkfeld chose to pursue surfing full-time after high school. That decision has brought wins, growth, and a clear vision — securing a berth in the World Surf League Challenger Series, the final stop before joining the global elite.

“It’s one of my biggest goals. I know it won’t be easy, but events like Cloud 9 help me get closer,” he said. “Every heat here counts.”

Arkfeld also has his eyes on qualifying for the Philippine national team once again, positioning himself for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Fueling the rise of Philippine surfing

With over 190 surfers from around the globe competing in Siargao, the event showcased how far Philippine surfing has come — and where it’s headed.

“The level keeps rising,” Arkfeld said. “Filipino surfers are hungry. We’re proving we can compete with the best.”

Driven by the island’s culture of grit and ocean rhythm, the young wave-chaser hopes to help lead the charge for local talent on the world stage.

“Those who came before us inspired me,” he said. “Now it’s my turn to push forward and show what Filipino surfers can do.”
