The Criss Cross King Crunchers continued their stellar run, clinching a dominant straight-set victory over the EcoOil La Salle Green Oilers, 25-21, 25-12, 25-23, at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig on Sunday, November 24. The win marked their fourth consecutive triumph and leveled their record with the Cignal HD Spikers at 6-1, placing them second behind the DN Steel FEU Ultras (7-1) in the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference standings.
Decisive Performance Under Pressure
Despite a commanding performance in the first two sets, the King Crunchers faced a revitalized Green Oilers squad in the third. The Oilers rallied to tie the score at 19-all, but critical errors in the final stretch allowed Criss Cross to seal the deal. Reigning MVP Jude Garcia delivered the final blow with a powerful backrow attack, clinching the hard-fought set.
“We prepared for this game thoroughly,” said Criss Cross team captain Ysay Marasigan, who contributed 10 points. “Even though La Salle struggled earlier in the conference, we never underestimated their potential.”
Standout Performances
Setter Ish Polvorosa orchestrated the King Crunchers’ offense with 20 excellent sets, earning the game’s top honors. “As a setter, you need vision and awareness, not just of your team but also of your opponents,” Polvorosa noted.
Jude Garcia once again led Criss Cross with 20 points, including an 18-of-26 attacking rate, while also recording eight excellent receptions. Supporting him was Nico Almendras with 11 points and nine receptions, as Criss Cross dominated the attacking department, 47-34.
Gian Glorioso added eight points, including three blocks, further solidifying Criss Cross’ defensive wall.
Green Oilers Show Resilience
While the Green Oilers struggled to keep pace, their fight in the third set highlighted their potential. Rui Ventura led with 11 points, and Eugene Gloria added seven markers. However, top scorer Noel Kampton, battling illness, managed just four points, and Vince Maglinao contributed only three points in limited action.
“La Salle played well. They’re full of potential and have a bright future,” Polvorosa remarked, emphasizing the young team’s promise despite their 4-3 record and recent struggles against top teams.
Pivotal Upcoming Matches
The victory boosts Criss Cross’ chances of securing a semifinal berth, with a match against winless Chichi DHTSI on Wednesday followed by a showdown against Savouge next Sunday, likely determining their semifinal seeding.
Meanwhile, the Green Oilers (4-3) face a must-win game against Savouge (5-2) on Friday to keep their semifinal hopes alive. With only three semifinal slots remaining, every game in the final week will be crucial in shaping the postseason picture.
