ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles finally broke through in the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference, snapping a 20-game losing streak with a four-set victory over the Nxled Chameleons, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-15, at the Ynares Center on Tuesday, November 19.
The Thunderbelles, previously known as Strong Group Athletics, had endured back-to-back winless campaigns since their 2024 league debut. This long-awaited victory marked a significant turnaround for the team.
“It’s just the beginning,” said ZUS Coffee head coach Jerry Yee. “Even in our first conference, we only had a few months to prepare. For this conference, we’ve added key veterans who’ve made a big difference.”
Yee emphasized the impact of experienced players, saying, “The veterans understand the game’s tempo and strategies. They know when to control the game and make tactical decisions rather than relying solely on power.”
The Thunderbelles displayed resilience after dropping the first set, narrowly clinching the next two sets before dominating the fourth. Veteran spiker Jovelyn Gonzaga spearheaded the offense, delivering 23 points on 20 spikes, three blocks, and 12 excellent digs.
Top draft pick Thea Gagate added 16 points, highlighted by five blocks, while team captain Cloanne Mondoñedo orchestrated the offense with 17 excellent sets.
ZUS Coffee, now 1-1 in the standings, looks to build momentum when they face Galeries Tower on November 28 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
On the other side, Nxled Chameleons remain winless at 0-2 despite solid performances from Chiara Permentilla (19 points) and Lucille Almonte (12 points, eight digs, and five receptions). The Chameleons will aim to regroup against Chery Tiggo on Tuesday at the same venue.
