The Philippine rowing team emerged as one of the biggest success stories at the Asian Rowing Beach Sprint Championships in Pattaya, Thailand after collecting three gold medals and one silver against top competitors from across the region. On Sunday, June 7, the young Filipino rowers showcased their talent and determination on the international stage while continuing the country’s rise in the fast-growing discipline.

Emman Pillar led the charge by winning the gold medal in the Under-16 Coastal Men’s Solo event. Matt Jugadora also delivered a podium finish after securing the silver medal in the Under-19 Coastal Men’s Solo category.

The strong opening performances provided momentum for the rest of the delegation. As the competition progressed, the Philippine rowing team continued to build on its success and added more medals to an already memorable campaign.

Young talents shine

The final day of competition brought two more gold medals for the Philippine rowing team. Ayonna Huerto and Khayzie Caviltes topped the Under-19 Coastal Women’s Double Sculls, while Kyle Olano and Pillar ruled the Under-16 Coastal Men’s Double Sculls.

The results earned praise from Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick Gregorio, who described the achievement as a significant development for the country’s rowing program. He emphasized that the victories reflected the potential of Filipino athletes when given opportunities through grassroots initiatives.

Gregorio has closely followed the progress of several members of the team since his time as president of the Philippine Rowing Association. Many of the athletes were discovered and developed in Ternate, Cavite, where rowing programs have produced a steady stream of promising competitors.

The PSC chairman referred to the young rowers as treasures of the nation’s coastal communities. Coming from families whose lives are closely tied to the sea, the athletes have transformed their experiences into success at the continental level.

Olympic hopes grow

Beach sprint rowing continues to gain attention around the world because of its unique combination of running, open-water rowing, buoy turns and sprint racing. The demanding format rewards speed, balance and agility, qualities that Filipino athletes have consistently displayed.

Gregorio believes the discipline presents a valuable opportunity for the country to strengthen its presence in future international competitions. He also expressed confidence that rising stars such as Pillar and Jugadora possess the potential to follow the path of Filipino Olympians.

The Philippines has previously been represented in Olympic rowing by Edgardo Maerina, Benjie Tolentino, Cris Nievarez and Joanie Delgado. Delgado made history as the first Filipina rower to qualify for the Olympic Games, and officials hope more athletes will soon join that list.

The Philippine rowing team competed in Thailand while mourning the passing of Philippine Rowing Association chairman Benjamin “Benjie” Ramos. Determined to honor his legacy, the athletes carried his vision with them throughout the tournament and produced one of the country’s most successful rowing performances in recent years.

Support for the delegation came from the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MVP Sports Foundation, Smart Sports, Maynilad and Fitpad Fitness. Their backing helped the Philippine rowing team deliver a breakthrough performance that could signal an even brighter future for the sport.
