Converge salvaged pride in its final PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup outing, overpowering Blackwater, 136-122, on Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. Though the victory could not erase a disappointing conference, it allowed the FiberXers to close their campaign with renewed optimism.

After a sluggish start, Converge steadily found its rhythm and eventually overwhelmed the struggling Bossing with superior depth, transition offense, and balanced scoring. The FiberXers finished with a 5-7 record, narrowly missing out on playoff qualification.

While the campaign fell short of expectations, the team’s closing performance offered a glimpse of resilience heading into future conferences. It also reinforced the organization’s commitment to regrouping and returning stronger.

Strong finish despite setbacks

Juan Gomez de Liano led Converge with 25 points, spearheading a well-rounded offensive attack that wore down Blackwater over four quarters. His leadership proved instrumental as the FiberXers recovered from early struggles.

Converge’s ability to capitalize on Blackwater’s mistakes became a defining factor. The FiberXers converted turnovers into significant scoring opportunities while dominating in transition.

Their 38-5 fastbreak scoring advantage highlighted their speed and execution. Additionally, Converge’s bench delivered a massive 77-34 scoring edge, emphasizing the team’s depth.

Coach Delta Pineda stressed the importance of maintaining professionalism despite elimination. He challenged his players to approach the game with playoff-level urgency, a mindset that translated into one of their strongest performances of the conference.

Pineda also acknowledged the many obstacles that derailed Converge’s campaign, including injuries, roster adjustments, and chemistry concerns. Despite those setbacks, he emphasized accountability and long-term growth.

Lessons for the future

Rather than dwell on disappointment, Converge now shifts focus toward recovery and preparation for the next conference. Gomez de Liano echoed this mindset, stressing the importance of learning from adversity.

The young star emphasized that maintaining optimism and team unity will be essential moving forward. He believes the difficult experience can become a valuable foundation for future success.

The FiberXers’ positive finish could serve as a critical building block if they improve cohesion and consistency. Their final performance demonstrated the talent that still makes them a dangerous team.

For Blackwater, another difficult campaign ended with a 2-10 record, placing the Bossing at the bottom of the standings. Despite Rob Upshaw’s remarkable 45-point, 18-rebound performance, turnovers and defensive lapses proved too costly.

Converge’s emphatic season-ending win may not have secured a playoff berth, but it reinforced the franchise’s determination to recalibrate and compete at a higher level next conference. With lessons learned and key pieces in place, the FiberXers now look ahead to redemption.
