The Karate One Youth League presented by the Philippine Sports Commission will be held from May 14 to 17 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The international youth karate competition will gather more than 1,000 athletes from 58 countries under the sanction of the World Karate Federation.
Karate ng Pilipinas Sports Federation Inc. president Ricky Lim described the event as a major investment in sports tourism. He said the tournament is expected to generate immediate economic activity while also creating long-term benefits for sports development and tourism.
Lim noted that participating nations include Australia, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Kazakhstan, the United States, and Uzbekistan. The Philippines will field 201 athletes from across the country.
Sports tourism impact
Lim said the event is expected to significantly increase tourist arrivals because many youth athletes will be accompanied by parents and team officials. This is projected to double the number of international visitors in Manila during the competition period.
He added that several delegations arrived early for training sessions with Filipino athletes, including the Malaysian youth team. This early preparation highlights growing international cooperation in youth karate development.
World Karate Federation officials led by president Anthony Espinos of Spain will oversee the event. The competition is also supported by the Asian Karate Federation, Philippine Olympic Committee, SM Group, Milo, and Lanson Place.
Tourism and economic benefits
Lim said foreign participants will experience Filipino culture, food, and destinations during their stay. He noted that Manila’s hospitality and accessibility make it a strong host for international sporting events.
He added that spending on shopping, accommodation, and leisure activities is expected to benefit local businesses. The event is positioned as both a sports competition and a tourism driver.
The initiative aligns with the sports tourism advocacy of Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick Gregorio. The strategy aims to generate income and employment opportunities through international sporting events.
Youth athlete development
Lim emphasized that the tournament provides valuable exposure for Filipino youth athletes competing against international opponents. He said this removes the need for costly overseas competition while still providing elite-level experience.
The four-day event allows continuous competition and learning opportunities for both athletes and coaches. It also strengthens the development pathway for young karatekas in the country.
Lim described the Karate One Youth League as a platform for both competition and growth for Philippine karate.
He said the event represents a win-win outcome for sports development and tourism, strengthening the country’s position as a host for international sporting events.
