The Philippine Sports Commission and SM Prime Holdings are in discussions for a major redevelopment of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, with plans centered on combining heritage preservation and modern sports infrastructure development. The initiative aims to transform the historic venue into a world-class sports, wellness, and lifestyle destination while maintaining its cultural significance.
PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio and SM Prime Chairman Hans Sy led initial discussions after a site visit to the complex, where both parties expressed interest in long-term collaboration for its redevelopment. Patrick Gregorio emphasized that the redevelopment vision focuses on preserving the 92-year-old sports complex while upgrading it to meet international standards for sports competitions and public use. He added that collaboration between public and private sectors is necessary to achieve a balanced transformation.
Heritage preservation and infrastructure modernization
The redevelopment plan includes major upgrades to key facilities such as the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium and the football field, which is expected to be developed to FIFA standards with natural grass and expanded seating capacity. These improvements are intended to support both local and international sporting events.
The project also includes upgrades to internal roads, pedestrian pathways, and public access areas within the 10-hectare complex, with the goal of improving functionality and accessibility for athletes and visitors. SM Prime brings extensive experience in large-scale infrastructure development through venues such as the SM Mall of Asia Arena and SM Seaside Cebu Arena.
The company also operates ice sports facilities in Metro Manila, contributing to the development of diverse sporting disciplines in the country. The PSC has already begun improvements within the complex, including upgraded lighting systems, road rehabilitation, and public access to the track oval for community use.
Broader sports development and long-term vision
Additional modernization efforts are also ongoing at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City, covering its track oval, aquatic center, and indoor arenas as part of broader national sports infrastructure upgrades. These improvements are aligned with efforts to elevate Philippine sports facilities to international standards.
Officials from both PSC and SM Prime have stated that the long-term objective is to position Manila as a competitive destination for international sports events while maintaining public access to upgraded facilities. The proposed partnership is also expected to strengthen sports tourism and support national athletic development.
