The Magnolia Hotshots treated their matchup against the Converge FiberXers as a playoff game and played with that mentality for 48 minutes, pulling off a 106-94 win on Sunday, April 19, at Ynares Center Antipolo in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Magnolia’s defense and rebounding set the tone early as it secured back-to-back wins and improved to 4-4, tying San Miguel Beer in the standings. Converge dropped to 2-6 after struggling to match the Hotshots’ physicality.

Coach LA Tenorio stressed a defense-first approach, challenging his team to treat the game as “win or go home.” The Hotshots responded with sustained stops and control of the halfcourt game.
Defensive mindset powers Magnolia win
Magnolia built an early 22-15 lead and never trailed, extending it to 49-39 at halftime through consistent defensive pressure and timely offense.
The Hotshots dominated the third quarter, holding Converge to just 18 points while widening the gap. Zavier Lucero’s two-handed dunk highlighted the run and energized the Ynares crowd.
Clint Chapman led Magnolia with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while Lucero posted 17 points and 14 rebounds to earn Best Player of the Game honors. Rome dela Rosa added 13 points, and Jerom Lastimosa contributed 10.
Converge struggles to keep pace
Converge failed to sustain its scoring rhythm against Magnolia’s defense and physical rebounding effort. The FiberXers were unable to close the gap after falling behind early.
The loss marked another setback for Converge, which continues to search for consistency in the conference. Magnolia, meanwhile, strengthened its push after a slow start to the season.
