AEP-Cabstars move closer to bronze with Game 1 win over Alpha Insurance

AEP-Cabstars moved within a win of securing the bronze medal after defeating Alpha Insurance in straight sets, 26-24, 25-23, 25-20, in Game 1 of the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference 2026 on Wednesday at the Filoil Centre. The Cabstars showed composure in crucial moments, especially in the opening frames where the match could have easily swung either way.

Despite facing tight exchanges in the first two sets, AEP-Cabstars maintained their poise and executed key plays down the stretch. Their ability to stay composed under pressure allowed them to take early control of the best-of-three battle for third place.

Cabstars close strong to seize Game 1 control

The third set initially mirrored the intensity of the first two, with both teams trading points in a tight contest. However, AEP-Cabstars shifted gears late, turning a slim 17-18 deficit into a dominant finish.

Dave Lardizabal, Jay Rack De La Noche, and Nas Gwaza fueled an explosive 8-2 closing run that sealed the straight-sets victory. The surge highlighted the team’s growing confidence and ability to respond in high-pressure situations.

De La Noche led the charge with 20 points, built on 18 attacks along with a block and an ace, while also contributing defensively. Jared Schnake added 13 points and nine excellent receptions, providing stability on both ends of the floor.

Alpha Insurance falters as Cabstars near podium finish

Lardizabal contributed 10 points, while Paul Malaiba and Gwaza chipped in eight markers each to round out a balanced offensive effort. Setter EJ Casana orchestrated the attack with 28 excellent sets, while Vince Lorenzo anchored the defense with 15 excellent digs and 19 excellent receptions.

Alpha Insurance, meanwhile, continued to struggle as it absorbed its fourth straight loss in the tournament. Jau Umandal led their side with 15 points, while Edward Camposano added 13 markers and contributed significantly in reception.

With momentum now on their side, AEP-Cabstars will aim to close out the series in Game 2 on Friday and secure their first-ever podium finish.
