Meralco sustained its strong start in the 2026 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, pulling away late to defeat Phoenix, 93-86, Saturday, March 21, at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo. The Bolts leaned on timely execution in the closing minutes to turn a tight contest into a controlled finish. The victory lifted them to 2-0 and kept them among the early leaders in the standings.

Phoenix, which entered the game unbeaten, absorbed its first loss after struggling to maintain its rhythm down the stretch. Despite staying competitive for most of the game, the Fuel Masters could not match Meralco’s late-game composure. The result reshuffled the early race in the conference.

Brickman sparks Meralco’s late-game separation

Jason Brickman emerged as a key figure in the Bolts’ win, producing 16 points, seven rebounds, and five assists without a turnover. His steady presence helped Meralco break a 77-all deadlock and seize control in the final stretch. The performance marked a significant leap from his modest debut.

Chris Banchero paced the team with 17 points off the bench, providing an offensive boost at crucial moments. Marvin Jones anchored the interior with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while Chris Newsome and CJ Cansino combined for 21 markers.

Meralco’s depth played a decisive role, particularly during a third-quarter stretch where the second unit created breathing room. The starters returned to maintain the advantage and close out the game. The team’s balance and discipline proved effective against a resilient opponent.

Head coach Luigi Trillo highlighted the collective effort, noting how both units contributed to the win. The bench provided energy, while the starters executed down the stretch. This combination allowed the Bolts to stay in control when it mattered most.

Phoenix undermanned despite Dickey’s dominant outing

Phoenix played without key contributors, including Kai Ballungay and Tyler Tio, while Jason Perkins saw limited minutes. These absences affected the team’s depth and overall rotation. Still, the Fuel Masters managed to keep the game close through sustained effort.

James Dickey III delivered a standout performance with 28 points and 21 rebounds. He carried much of the offensive load and kept Phoenix within striking distance. However, the lack of support in critical moments hindered their chances.

A late push from Phoenix briefly threatened Meralco’s lead, but the Bolts responded with timely baskets. A key four-point play from Bong Quinto helped create separation in the final minutes. From there, Meralco held firm to secure the win.

The outcome highlighted Meralco’s ability to execute under pressure. Phoenix, on the other hand, will look to regroup as it deals with injuries and rotation challenges. The game underscored the importance of depth in a tightly contested conference.
