Bossing Stun Rain or Shine 131-108 Behind Barkley Magic

Kentrell Barkley needed just one game to announce himself as Blackwater’s newest weapon. The import exploded for a triple-double in his PBA debut, powering the Bossing to a statement-making 131-108 rout of Rain or Shine on Saturday in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Center in Montalban.

Barkley finished with 29 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists, torching the E-Painters from the opening tip and igniting a wire-to-wire beatdown that ballooned to as much as 34 points, 103-69, before the final horn sounded on one of Blackwater’s most lopsided wins over its longtime tormentor.

Barkley’s Triple-Double Sets Early Tone for Blackwater

The 6-foot-8 import wasted no time making his presence felt, drilling his first seven shots — including four 3-pointers — to jump-start the rout and give Blackwater the aggressive, downhill spark coach Patrick Aquino had been counting on.

“Just happy that, you know, everybody stepped up, everybody played with the mindset of winning the game and they never gave up,” Aquino said. “Hopefully, this good start would continue more in the games to come.”

Barkley became just the second Bossing player to record a triple-double since Cameron Krutwig pulled off the feat in the 2022-’23 Commissioner’s Cup, a rare distinction that instantly stamped his arrival in the PBA. The former Indonesian league MVP said the outburst was simply a byproduct of sticking to the game plan.

“I was just being aggressive, trusting coach Pat’s game plan,” Barkley said. “I feel like if I’m aggressive on the court, I give my teammates the best chance of winning the game. I got a little tired since the second quarter, but I found other ways to impact the game without scoring, so I feel like I’m part of the reason we won the game.”

Aquino was quick to credit his new import’s approach off the floor as much as on it. “Kentrell is a great teammate. When he came here, he studied who he’s gonna play for, and we’re just happy that we had him. I hope we just follow KB, and I think we’re gonna go far — as far as we could go — with KB around.”

Bossing Flip the Script on Rain or Shine Rivalry

The victory carried extra weight given Blackwater’s brutal history against Rain or Shine. The Bossing entered Saturday having won just once in their last 17 meetings with the E-Painters dating back to 2019, and the scars from their most recent encounter were still fresh — a league-record 151-95 demolition Rain or Shine hung on them last March 31.

This time, Blackwater turned the tables. Sedrick Barefield poured in 24 points, torching Rain or Shine for 14 of those in a decisive third-quarter surge that saw the Bossing rip off a 19-5 run to balloon a 72-56 lead to 91-60. RK Ilagan and Dolph Panopio combined for 41 points, while James Una added 12 and Abu Tratter chipped in 11 as Blackwater’s depth overwhelmed the E-Painters from start to finish.

The win doesn’t just avenge an old blowout — it hands Blackwater a critical tiebreaker cushion in the Group B standings, should the two teams find themselves knotted for a top-four seed later in the conference.

For Rain or Shine, the loss marked its worst defeat since a 90-114 blowout at the hands of Barangay Ginebra last May 3 in the Commissioner’s Cup eliminations. The setback came despite a strong return from import Aaron Fuller, who put up 38 points and 15 rebounds in his season debut. Beyond Fuller, however, the E-Painters got little scoring punch, with only Adrian Nocum and Gian Mamuyac reaching double figures. Rain or Shine shot just 42-of-95 from the field, including a woeful 7-of-31 from 3-point range, while turning the ball over 16 times and getting stripped of the ball 12 times.

With the emphatic win, Blackwater opens its Governors’ Cup campaign on a high note — and puts the rest of Group B on notice that Kentrell Barkley is ready to carry the Bossing deep into the conference.
