Djokovic shrugs off fall to notch record 400th grand slam win

Novak Djokovic added another chapter to his long résumé on Saturday, January 24, advancing into the fourth round of the Australian Open while carving out a piece of history in Melbourne. The world No. 4 defeated Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets to become the first player to reach 400 career grand slam match wins.

The 24-time major champion remained flawless through three rounds, completing a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory in two hours and 44 minutes. The win kept Djokovic unbeaten in sets as he continues his pursuit of another title at Rod Laver Arena.

Djokovic controlled much of the contest with disciplined baseline play and sharp serving, limiting opportunities for the Dutchman to seize momentum. That control was briefly threatened when an unexpected incident disrupted the flow of the match.

Fall raises concern under the lights

Early in the third set, Djokovic slipped and fell awkwardly on the court, immediately drawing attention to his right ankle. Medical staff later taped the ankle as a precaution, creating a brief pause in an otherwise steady performance.

Despite the scare, Djokovic refused to dial back his intensity and continued to chase down balls with trademark movement. Van de Zandschulp took advantage of the moment to earn a break, pushing the set into a tense finish.

Djokovic delivers in the biggest moments

The Serb responded with calm execution, breaking back and forcing a tiebreak where his experience proved decisive. He elevated his level late, closing out the match and extinguishing any hopes of a comeback.

Djokovic later said his body responded well after the fall and stressed the importance of staying patient as the tournament progresses. He also avoided controversy after narrowly missing a ball kid while venting frustration during the match.

Djokovic will face either 16th seed Jakub Mensik or American Ethan Quinn in the fourth round as his Australian Open campaign continues.
