Alex Eala has done what no Filipino has ever done before.
The 21-year-old tennis phenom stormed into the Round of 16 at Wimbledon 2026 — the first Filipino in history to reach that stage of a Grand Slam tournament. Along the way, she vaulted to a career-high No. 28 in the WTA singles rankings.
Now, as Eala returns home to a hero’s welcome, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is stepping forward to celebrate not just her game, but the grit behind it.

Eala’s Wimbledon Run Cements Her Place in Philippine Sports History
Eala’s fourth-round finish at the All England Club wasn’t just a personal milestone. It was a national one.
Across the Philippines, BPI employees rallied around the young athlete. They tracked her matches. They cheered as she carried the Philippine flag deep into one of tennis’s most prestigious stages.
BPI President and CEO TG Limcaoco was quick to recognize the achievement.
“On behalf of everyone at BPI, congratulations on your amazing and historic run at Wimbledon—becoming the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16,” Limcaoco said, welcoming Eala home.
Beyond the numbers, Limcaoco pointed to something less tangible, but just as significant: Eala’s character on and off the court.
“What makes us proudest is not just how far you’ve come, but how you handle every match—with grit, grace, and guts,” he said. “You have been not only an inspiration but proof that while not every fight is won, true victory lies in never giving up.”
With her new career-high ranking, Eala now stands as the highest-ranked Filipino ever on the WTA Tour — a distinction that places her name permanently in the country’s sporting record books.
A Homecoming Rooted in Family, Financial Growth and the BPI Legacy
The celebration wasn’t just about trophies and rankings.
During a media event marking her homecoming, Eala was asked how she plans to manage her growing prize money. The question pointed to a deeper partnership behind her rise.
“I am so lucky and blessed to be under the guidance of my parents, under the guidance of my family at BPI,” Eala said, crediting the institution that has supported her since 2022 through NEXT by BPI Preferred.
That relationship runs deeper than sponsorship.
Eala grew up in the Ayala community, where many BPI employees were friends and colleagues of her parents. Her connection to the bank predates her rise to global tennis fame, and today, that bond continues to shape her approach to both athletic and financial discipline.
“Alex has been part of the BPI family for many years, and it has been inspiring to watch her grow into one of the country’s most accomplished athletes,” said Cathy Santamaria, BPI head of customer and marketing.
“Her journey reflects the values that have guided BPI for 175 years,” Santamaria added. “Through our continued partnership, we hope to inspire more young Filipinos to pursue their dreams with confidence, knowing that meaningful progress begins with taking the first step.”
NEXT by BPI Preferred, the program supporting Eala, is built for emerging professionals working toward life’s first major milestones.
Through tools like the Virtual Financial Coach and Easy Wins with Elevated Savings, the program helps young Filipinos build savings and financial confidence — a philosophy that mirrors the same patience and consistency that fueled Eala’s climb up the WTA rankings.
As BPI marks 175 years of serving Filipino communities, its partnership with Eala has become a symbol of what the bank hopes to inspire in the next generation.
The belief: Lasting success — whether on a tennis court or a bank statement — is built through discipline, perseverance and informed decisions, one step at a time.
