Meralco finally matched TNT’s physicality and pace, turning in a composed 97-89 victory on Friday, Jan. 9, to put itself back in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup semifinal picture at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Bolts led from start to finish, erasing the sting of a lopsided Game 2 defeat and slicing the Tropang 5G’s series lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven showdown.
Chris Banchero and CJ Cansino set the tone early and never let up, each finishing with 18 points as Meralco dictated tempo on both ends. The win also snapped a seven-game losing spell against TNT.
Meralco’s response was built on collective resolve after absorbing heavy losses in the opening games of the series. Head coach Luigi Trillo stressed the importance of effort and unity as the Bolts pushed back against TNT’s physical approach.

Defense finally sets the tone
Meralco’s pressure defense paid immediate dividends, holding TNT below the 100-point mark for the first time in the series. Calvin Oftana, who averaged 27.0 points over the first two games, was limited to six points on 1-of-7 shooting.
Jordan Heading was also neutralized, going scoreless despite seven attempts from the field. Meralco’s activity on passing lanes and closeouts disrupted TNT’s offensive rhythm throughout the night.
Trillo credited the steady guidance of consultant Nenad Vucinic, who remained involved despite being overseas for a family commitment. The Serbian-New Zealander continued sending video breakdowns and tactical notes to the coaching staff.
TNT rally falls short
TNT mounted a brief comeback midway through the third quarter behind Roger Pogoy, who erupted for 28 points to double his series average. His personal 12-point run cut a 16-point deficit down to four and briefly swung momentum.
Rey Nambatac added 13 points, all coming from a perfect 7-of-7 showing at the free-throw line, while Kelly Williams chipped in 11 points anchored on three three-pointers. Their efforts came on a night when TNT honored former stalwart Ranidel de Ocampo by retiring his No. 33 jersey at halftime.
Meralco calmly absorbed the rally and responded with timely baskets and stops. Chris Newsome delivered 17 points along with five assists and four rebounds, while Bong Quinto supplied 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Raymond Almazan added interior presence with 11 points and eight rebounds as Meralco limited TNT to 25-of-66 shooting from the field. The Bolts also rediscovered their touch from long range, knocking down eight three-pointers after making just one in the previous game.
With Game 4 set for Sunday, Meralco knows the work is far from finished. Still, the Bolts have finally given themselves a foothold in a series that had tilted heavily in TNT’s favor.
