Meralco completes twice-to-win escape, grabs last Philippine Cup semis berth

Meralco refused to bow out early, overturning a twice-to-win disadvantage to lock up the final semifinal berth in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup. The Bolts followed up a convincing weekend win with a composed 98-89 decision Monday, December 29, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Chris Newsome took control when it mattered most, pouring in 31 points highlighted by late-game conversions that blunted every Rain or Shine rally. The result completed Meralco’s sweep of the quarterfinal hurdle and sent them through as the tournament’s seventh seed.

After trailing early, the Bolts wrestled momentum before halftime and never loosened their grip down the stretch. Timely perimeter shooting and disciplined defense allowed them to dictate the tempo in the closing minutes.

Bolts join elite company

Meralco became the second team in as many nights to survive a twice-to-win scenario, mirroring Barangay Ginebra’s earlier escape. The victory officially set the semifinal cast alongside San Miguel Beer, Ginebra and TNT.

Chris Banchero delivered crucial support with 21 points, while CJ Cansino and Bong Quinto added 14 and 11, respectively. Their balanced effort paved the way for a best-of-seven showdown against the Tropang 5G starting Jan. 4.

Norwood era ends in defeat

The loss marked the end of Gabe Norwood’s 18-year PBA career, all spent with Rain or Shine. Players from both teams stayed on the floor afterward to acknowledge the veteran’s long service to the league.

“I wanted to finish with a championship, but credit to Meralco for the way they played,” Norwood said after the game. Short-handed without key big men Keith Datu and Beau Belga, the Elasto Painters fought on but fell short of a fifth straight semifinal appearance.
