They came in all shapes and sizes, but one name towered above the rest at the end of Day 1 of the 2025 Premier Volleyball League Rookie Draft Combine—Tia Andaya.
The Alas Pilipinas standout and Central Washington University alumna made a thunderous impression at Paco Arena, recording the highest marks in both the countermovement jump (294 cm) and the approach jump (307 cm). Fresh off national team training, Andaya’s explosive athleticism and refined versatility immediately set her apart from the 51 rookie hopefuls who took part in the day’s activities.

Top prospects shine in speed, strength, and agility tests
Day 1 of the two-day combine subjected participants to a demanding seven-hour schedule filled with athletic evaluations. Of the 60 registered applicants, 51 reported to the venue for a battery of tests that included anthropometric measurements, speed drills, strength tests, and vertical jump assessments.
While Andaya excelled in vertical explosiveness, other prospects also carved out standout performances. Von Dimaculangan of San Sebastian topped the 10-meter acceleration test at 1.55 seconds. Jamaica Villena of EAC posted the best time in the modified T-test at 5.34 seconds.
Lea Rizel Tapang (Letran) and Lyann De Guzman (Ateneo) led the push-up leaderboard with 47 reps each. University of the East’s Riza Nogales emerged as the tallest participant at 184.3 cm, while Pearl Ann Denura registered as the shortest at 150.8 cm. Nogales also tied with Zenneth Perolino of Enderun Colleges for the highest standing reach at 243 cm.
Media and legal training highlight off-court prep; key absences noted
Beyond physical tests, athletes participated in professional development workshops. Inquirer Sports Editor and PSA president Francis Ochoa led a media training session, while Atty. Erose Marlo Laeno of the Games and Amusements Board conducted a talk on player contracts and legal responsibilities.
However, the combine was not without setbacks. Several projected top picks were absent, including NU’s Bella Belen and veteran setter Alohi Robins-Hardy. Other no-shows included Kristine Adante, Pauline De Guzman, Nenita Padua, Joan Doguna, Ezriah Martinez, and Mary Ann Rioflorido.
“Tia was late but made it. Hopefully the rest arrive tomorrow,” said PVL Control Committee chairman Sherwin Malonzo.
Also present but not participating in any drills was Mycah Go of De La Salle–College of St. Benilde.
Day 2 of the combine resumes Saturday with full on-court scrimmages, giving prospects a final shot to impress coaches and scouts ahead of the PVL Rookie Draft on June 8 at Novotel Manila.
