Alas Pilipinas’ bid for the Round of 16 now comes down to one match. The Philippines squares off with Venezuela in a must-win showdown Tuesday at the close of pool play in the FIVB Volleyball Girls U17 World Championship at Liceo Mixto San Felipe, with a spot in the knockout phase hanging in the balance.

World No. 6 Peru showed poise under fire a day earlier, rallying from a set down to beat Alas Pilipinas, 26-28, 25-22, 25-23, 25-20, on Monday — a defeat that dealt a serious blow to the Philippines’ hopes of advancing and set up Tuesday’s do-or-die clash.

A Costly Collapse Against Peru

The Filipinas had control for much of the match against Peru but unraveled in the third set, squandering a 10-point lead. At one stretch, they watched Peru rattle off eight straight points to seize momentum for good.

Nahir Cueva Coaguila powered Peru with 19 points on 17 attacks and two blocks. Fernanda De Los Angeles Pinto Tellez chipped in 16 points on 13 attacks and three aces, while Cielo Yamileth Quispe Venegas added 10 points on nine attacks and a block.

Fourteen-year-old Sharina Rhyza Lleses paced Alas Pilipinas with 18 points, all off attacks. Caera Celis posted 17 points on 15 attacks and two aces, while Xyz Rayco finished with 12 points on 10 attacks and two aces.

The loss allowed Peru to join China in clinching a spot in the Round of 16. China blanked Mexico, 25-12, 25-15, 25-17, to complete a four-match sweep without dropping a set and lock up the top spot in Pool B, while Peru holds the provisional No. 2 spot with a 3-1 record. The two teams meet Tuesday to decide the pool’s top seed.

The Math Behind the Must-Win Match

Venezuela and the Philippines are deadlocked at 2-2, with Venezuela holding the No. 3 spot on seven points and Alas Pilipinas sitting fourth with six. The top four teams from each six-team pool advance to the Round of 16, giving both sides plenty to play for when they collide Tuesday.

A convincing win over Venezuela would catapult Alas Pilipinas back up to No. 2 in the pool. Even a five-set defeat would still net the Filipinas a point — enough to secure a Round of 16 berth.

A three- or four-set loss, however, combined with a Mexico sweep of Tunisia, would knock the Philippines out of contention and send them to the classification phase instead.

Mexico currently sits fifth at 1-3 with three points, but a three- or four-set win over Tunisia would push their total to six points, directly threatening the Philippines’ path forward.

In Pool D, Korea leads at 4-0, followed by Italy at 3-1, while Chinese Taipei and Puerto Rico are tied at 2-2.
