Meralco wasted no time asserting control in a high-stakes clash against Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, turning a tightly contested opening stretch into a one-sided statement victory. The Bolts leaned on defensive intensity and efficient scoring to seize momentum and never let go.
The decisive stretch came in the second quarter, where Meralco unleashed a 29-13 run that completely shifted the game’s balance and silenced the packed Smart Araneta Coliseum crowd. By halftime, the Bolts had established a rhythm that Ginebra struggled to disrupt for the remainder of the contest.

Second quarter surge sets tone for Meralco rout
That explosive second-period run proved to be the turning point, as Meralco combined perimeter shooting with transition stops to build a commanding cushion. The Bolts’ energy on both ends of the floor forced Ginebra into rushed possessions and difficult shot selections.
Barangay Ginebra attempted to respond behind its veterans, but every mini-run was quickly answered by Meralco’s structured half-court offense. The Bolts maintained composure even when the Kings tried to inject physicality into the matchup.
Chris Newsome highlighted the importance of the win, stressing how crucial it was in shaping Meralco’s position in the standings. He pointed out that defeating a team on a winning streak gave the Bolts a much-needed boost in their Top 4 pursuit.
Balanced attack and defensive pressure seal victory
Meralco’s offense was spread across multiple contributors, with Marvin Jones and CJ Cansino each delivering 18 points to set the tone inside and out. The Bolts complemented their scoring balance with defensive pressure that limited Ginebra’s supporting cast throughout the game.
Newsome added 12 points along with key defensive plays, while Cliff Hodge and Bong Quinto provided consistent support on both ends of the floor. The depth of Meralco’s rotation allowed them to sustain intensity even in extended runs.
Ginebra leaned heavily on Justin Brownlee and RJ Abarrientos, who both finished with 24 points, but the lack of additional scoring options proved costly. No other Gin Kings player managed to reach double figures, making it difficult to keep pace with Meralco’s balanced attack.
The loss halted Ginebra’s five-game winning streak and tightened the race for positioning in the upper half of the standings. Meralco, meanwhile, strengthened its push for a coveted Top 4 finish that could secure a twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs.
