Barangay Ginebra refused to let a disastrous start define its night, storming back from a 20-point deficit to defeat Blackwater, 115-108, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday, April 24, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Gin Kings endured a relentless challenge before taking control late to secure a crucial victory.

The comeback win pushed Ginebra to a 6-2 record, tying NLEX for second place and keeping them within striking distance of league-leading Rain or Shine. More importantly, it reinforced their position in the race for a coveted top four finish with only a handful of elimination games remaining.

Blackwater dictated the tempo early, building a massive lead behind the dominant presence of Robert Upshaw III. The towering import imposed his will inside, creating mismatches and forcing Ginebra to adjust as the game threatened to slip away in the opening half.

Ginebra finds answers after slow start

Ginebra gradually worked its way back into the contest by tightening its defense and executing more efficiently on offense. The Gin Kings chipped away at the deficit possession by possession, showing patience and composure instead of forcing quick shots.

Tim Cone credited his team’s ability to deliver in crucial moments, particularly down the stretch where shot-making and decision-making became the difference. Ginebra consistently answered every Blackwater push once the game tightened.

Justin Brownlee led the balanced attack with 21 points, setting the tone with his steady scoring and leadership on the floor. Scottie Thompson added 19 points, while rookie RJ Abarrientos continued to impress with 18 markers in another confident outing.

Troy Rosario took advantage of extended minutes and delivered 17 points along with 10 rebounds, providing a significant boost on both ends. Stephen Holt and Japeth Aguilar also contributed double-digit outputs, highlighting the depth that fueled Ginebra’s turnaround.

Upshaw dominates but Blackwater fades late

Robert Upshaw III delivered a towering performance for Blackwater, finishing with 43 points and 14 rebounds while consistently overwhelming defenders inside. His presence forced Ginebra into foul trouble and dictated much of the game’s physicality.

Despite Upshaw’s dominance, Blackwater struggled to sustain its early momentum as Ginebra’s defense tightened and forced tougher looks in the second half. The Elite found themselves unable to match the Gin Kings’ execution in the closing minutes.

Ginebra’s composure in the final stretch proved decisive, as timely baskets and defensive stops allowed them to finally seize control after trailing for most of the game. The ability to convert under pressure ultimately separated the two teams.

The loss dropped Blackwater to 2-7, placing them in a difficult position with limited room for error in their remaining games. Ginebra, meanwhile, continues its push toward securing a top four finish, carrying strong momentum into a challenging final stretch.
