Morocco builds tech momentum with fiber surge before AFCON 2025

As Morocco counts down to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a major upgrade is happening behind the scenes: the nation’s internet infrastructure. A new report from global connectivity firm Ookla reveals rapid progress in Morocco’s fixed broadband and hotel Wi-Fi performance, laying the groundwork for a digitally connected experience for millions of visitors.

Fiber-Fueled Growth Across the Kingdom

Morocco’s fixed broadband market has surged to nearly 2.6 million connections by Q3 2024—up from 1.6 million in 2019—thanks to accelerated fiber optic rollouts. According to Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence®, Casablanca and Rabat are leading the charge, recording median broadband speeds of 36.55 Mbps and 35.57 Mbps, respectively. These upgrades are part of the government’s $1 billion “Maroc Digital 2030” strategy, aiming to reach 4.4 million households with fiber by end-2025 and 5.6 million by 2030.

Hotels Delivering High-Speed Digital Hospitality

While some cities boast superior fixed broadband, Morocco’s tourist hotspots—Agadir and Marrakesh—are punching above their weight in hotel Wi-Fi performance. Top-tier establishments like The View (72.27 Mbps), Hotel Riu Palace Tikida (55.72 Mbps), and La Mamounia (54.64 Mbps) are setting benchmarks that rival or outperform hotels in cities with faster household internet.

However, not all luxury accommodations are keeping pace. Casablanca and Rabat’s five-star hotels face noticeable lag in Wi-Fi delivery, despite proximity to fiber networks. The culprit? Outdated or misconfigured access points. With smart optimization, these properties can catch up—and fast.

Why It Matters for AFCON 2025

From livestreaming matches to uploading real-time content, fans demand reliable internet. Ookla’s report suggests that Morocco is rising to the occasion. With fiber deployments accelerating and the long-awaited 5G rollout expected this year, digital connectivity will no longer be a concern—but a competitive edge.

Karim Yaici, Lead Industry Analyst at Ookla, put it plainly: “Morocco’s digital transformation is not only essential for hosting global events like AFCON and the World Cup—it’s also redefining tourism for a new era of always-online travelers.”
