Converge crushes Blackwater with 31-Point rout before PBA break

The Converge FiberXers delivered a basketball masterclass on Palm Sunday, April 13, demolishing Blackwater Bossing 111-80 in a one-sided PBA Commissioner’s Cup showdown at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Fueled by a punishing 60-29 run across the second and third quarters, the FiberXers completely flipped the switch after a slow start. Justin Arana led the charge with a double-double performance—19 points and 11 rebounds—while Schonny Winston and Justine Baltazar chipped in 16 apiece to spark the offensive eruption.

Converge’s three-point arsenal was on full display, hitting 50% from long range, led by Rey Suerte’s 3-of-4 shooting from deep. It was a statement win for Converge, which now sits at 2-2 heading into a crucial two-week break.

“It’s good to win this game before our long break and before facing a tough, tough team in TNT,” said Converge head coach Franco Atienza, referencing their April 27 matchup against Grand Slam-chasing TNT Tropang 5G.

Winston, who also tallied five assists, said the team’s shooting confidence came from intense practice. “We put a lot of work in practice, before and after. That’s why we’re letting it fly.”

Meanwhile, Blackwater stumbled to its second straight blowout loss, after being manhandled by San Miguel. The Bossing shot just 34% from the field and had no answers for Converge’s physical defense and unrelenting pace.

Converge’s renewed focus on defense paid dividends as they held the Bossing to just 15 points in the third quarter, essentially sealing the game. Atienza emphasized the team’s evolving identity: “If we want to be a contender, we have to toughen up on defense.”

With momentum now on their side, the FiberXers have a chance to recalibrate and reload for their toughest test yet. But for now, they head into the break with swagger—and a 31-point statement.
