The spotlight shifts to the KondohGumi Hyogo squad as the Japanese guest team debuts in the semifinals of the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference Friday, December 6, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre, San Juan City.
Returning to the league under a new name, the Hyogo-based team—formerly Maruichi—seeks to replicate or surpass last year’s third-place finish. Led by head coach Kota Kunichika, the revamped roster boasts young and energetic talents, including setter Kyoshiro Yamamoto, spikers Riku Norihisa, Roya Kakimoto, and Haruto Shiozaki, along with middle blockers Kohsuke Kakiuchi and Takaya Akamatsu.
Spin Doctors Eager to Bounce Back
Standing in their way are the Savouge Spin Doctors, hungry to secure their first win in the round-robin semifinals. After a three-set loss to Cignal HD Spikers last Wednesday, Savouge hopes for a stronger performance led by Norwel Sanama, Louis Gamban, and JD Diwa.
“Every point counts in a round-robin semis. We’ll give everything we have to get the win and stay in contention,” a determined Gamban shared ahead of the game.
Cignal vs FEU-DN Steel: Battle for Momentum
In the opening match, the Cignal HD Spikers aim to maintain their unbeaten semis run as they face FEU-DN Steel, who are searching for redemption after their straight-set loss to Criss Cross.
Cignal’s Louie Ramirez and JM Ronquillo proved to be a potent duo in their last game, combining for 31 points. However, head coach Dexter Clamor emphasized the importance of consistency and urgency throughout the match.
“Some of our players tend to relax during critical moments. We need to stay sharp and mature to dominate in this format,” Clamor said.
Meanwhile, FEU-DN Steel looks to bounce back with standout Dryx Saavedra, who tallied 15 points in their previous match, leading the charge.
