Uihlein eyes second International Series Title after gritty third round in Qatar

Peter Uihlein surged ahead at the International Series Qatar, positioning himself for a second Series title. The American finished the third round with a one-under-par 71, claiming a one-shot lead over fellow countryman Zach Bauchou at the Doha Golf Club.

Uihlein’s round was steady despite difficult windy conditions and firm greens. He birdied the final two holes to offset earlier bogeys on holes three and 14. “It was tough all day with the wind, but I stayed steady,” said Uihlein, who hit 16 greens in regulation.

The former International Series England champion now has a chance to redeem his earlier near-miss at the International Series Thailand, where he lost a two-shot lead on the final hole. A victory tomorrow could propel him to the top of The International Series Rankings.

Zach Bauchou, Uihlein’s closest rival, carded a 70 with birdies on holes 13, 16, and 18. He acknowledged the course’s difficulty, noting that birdie opportunities were limited. “It’s all about grinding and making the most of the par fives,” Bauchou commented.

Italian Stefano Mazzoli dazzled the crowd with a hole-in-one on the par-three 17th, the first ace of his career. Mazzoli, who is vying for the Asian Tour Rookie of the Year Award, finished with a 69, tying with India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar for third place.

Other notable performances included South African Louis Oosthuizen and Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai, both tied for fifth at eight under. Meanwhile, John Catlin, who leads The International Series Rankings, moved closer to securing the Asian Tour Order of Merit with a solid 70.

With one round remaining, the stage is set for an exciting finale at the $2.5 million International Series Qatar.
