Nitithorn Thippong has breathed new life into his season with an extraordinary first-round performance at the US$2 million Link Hong Kong Open. The Thai golfer, nicknamed “Fever,” shot an impressive eight-under-par 62 at Hong Kong Golf Club, Fanling, to take the first-round lead.
Thippong, who has struggled in 2023, fought back after a challenging start to the year. His round featured an eagle, seven birdies, and one bogey. Despite a tough finish, where he found himself in a bunker on the par-four 18th hole, Thippong holed a clutch par-saving shot from the sand to secure his impressive lead.
“I shanked that second shot on 18 after a great drive,” Thippong shared. “But I calmed myself down and holed the next one. The key for me was to flow and stick with the plan.”
The 28-year-old golfer, who has won three times on the Asian Tour, is currently 81st on the Order of Merit. He needs a stellar performance this week and next to crack the top 30 and earn a spot at the season-ending PIF Saudi International.
Defending Champion Ben Campbell from New Zealand is in hot pursuit, sitting just one shot behind Thippong with a seven-under-par 63. Campbell, the 2022 champion, was in fine form again, especially with his driving accuracy and putting.
Kevin Yuan of Australia and Kazuki Higa from Japan also shot impressive rounds of 63, putting them in contention heading into the second round. Thippong will need to keep his momentum going, as the competition heats up with several golfers vying for the top prize.
With only three events left in the season, Thippong’s strong start has set him up for a potential breakthrough. His recent mental and emotional struggles, including concerns about his father’s health, have been set aside as he focuses on his game.
As the tournament continues, Thippong will aim to maintain his lead and keep the pressure on fellow contenders, including defending champion Ben Campbell, while also keeping an eye on his ultimate goal: securing a top-30 finish and a spot in the prestigious Saudi International.
