At the opening keynote of the annual “Youth in the Perspective of the Olympic Movement” conference, Youth Charter Chair Geoff Thompson delivered a powerful message urging the next International Olympic Committee (IOC) President to make sport for development a central priority.

Speaking before an audience of young leaders, athletes, and global stakeholders, Thompson emphasized that Olympism should go beyond competition, harnessing the power of sport to unite communities, foster inclusivity, and drive personal development.

“As we stand on the brink of a new era in the Olympic movement, we must ensure that every young person has access to the transformative power of sport,” Thompson stated. “The next IOC president must champion sport for development, recognizing its potential to unite communities and inspire future generations.”

Sport as a Catalyst for Social Change

Thompson’s speech underscored sport’s ability to transcend borders and create lasting social impact. He highlighted that while the Olympics celebrate elite athleticism, they also embody hope, resilience, and unity.

“The Olympics have always been about more than medals. They embody the spirit of hope, resilience, and unity. It is our responsibility to harness that spirit and ensure it reaches every corner of the world, especially the youth who are our future leaders.”

The conference theme aligned with Thompson’s message, focusing on the intersection of sport, education, and social responsibility. Key discussions revolved around how sport can be a tool for empowerment, particularly for marginalized youth and underprivileged communities.

Shaping the Future of Olympism

As part of the conference’s agenda, workshops and strategy sessions on the second day aimed at developing concrete initiatives to integrate sport for development into local and global programs. These actionable recommendations will be compiled and presented to the IOC, forming part of a collective vision for the future of the Olympic movement.

With the next IOC presidential transition on the horizon, Thompson’s call to action serves as a crucial reminder that Olympism must evolve—not just as a platform for world-class athletes, but as a driving force for social progress and youth empowerment worldwide.
