Leylah Fernandez Wins Singapore Open, Eyes Return to Island

Leylah Fernandez capped a dominant week at The Kallang with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Talia Gibson, clinching the Singapore Tennis Open crown. The sixth-seed’s win marked her sixth career title and second at the WTA 500 level.

The victory capped nine days of high-level tennis at the tournament, presented by BNP Paribas. Fernandez said the crowd played a major role in fueling her run through the draw.

Fernandez Reflects on a Dominant Week

“It was a great week of tennis, of fight, of grit,” Fernandez said after the final. She added that crossing the finish line to lift the trophy made the achievement “even sweeter.”

Fernandez credited the atmosphere at The Kallang for pushing her through tough matches. “My best memory in every match this week would have to be the crowd — they gave me the extra energy to keep fighting,” she said.

She also pointed to her improved balance between offense and defense as key to the title run. “It’s been a lot of hard work in finding that right balance of attacking and defending,” Fernandez said, adding that everything “clicked in the right place at the right time” in the final.

Fernandez said she hopes to return to Singapore in the future. “Playing in Singapore has been an amazing experience and I can’t wait to come back to experience this level of love again,” she said.

Doubles Title and Record Turnout Highlight the Week

Erin Routliffe and Aldila Sutjiadi also claimed the doubles title, defeating Tang Qianhui and Xu Yifan, 6-3, 6-2, after a tight start. It marked the pair’s second doubles title together this year.

“We’re lucky to be able to play together and build a partnership,” Routliffe and Sutjiadi said. They praised the atmosphere at The Kallang and expressed hope for more large-scale events in the region.

The tournament, organized by The Kallang Group, drew roughly 50,000 fans across nine days, more than double its 2025 attendance. The event featured a 28-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw.

Players competed for a share of more than $1.2 million in prize money throughout the tournament. Organizers confirmed the Singapore Tennis Open will return in 2027, building on the momentum of its first WTA 500 edition.
