A stacked field of champions and medalists is set to take center stage in Pasig as the Philippine leg of the Women’s Volleyball Nations League begins on Wednesday at Philsports Arena.

World No. 1 and reigning VNL champion Italy headlines the competition as the flagship annual tournament of volleyball’s world governing body, the FIVB, returns to the country. The week-long event brings together some of the sport’s top-ranked nations in a crucial stretch of the preliminary round.

Japan arrives in the Philippines carrying an unbeaten 4-0 record after a dominant opening week. The 2024 VNL silver medalist scored victories over France, Ukraine, Germany, and Canada to emerge as one of the tournament’s early pace-setters.

Led by captain Mayu Ishikawa along with Yoshino Sato and Yukiko Wada, Japan hopes to continue its strong form as the race for a place in the finals intensifies.

Top Teams Seek Momentum

Italy enters the Philippine leg with a 3-1 mark after opening the competition with victories over Bulgaria, the Netherlands, and Türkiye. The defending champions saw their winning streak halted by Brazil but remain among the favorites to contend for the title.

Ekaterina Antropova, Merit Adigwe, and Loveth Omoruyi have powered the Italian campaign and will be expected to play major roles once again in Pasig. Their combination of scoring depth and experience has made Italy one of the toughest teams in the tournament.

Three-time VNL champion United States also owns a 3-1 record entering Week 2, while world No. 13 Czechia has matched that start. Both teams will be looking to strengthen their position in the standings as competition resumes.

Meanwhile, world No. 9 Serbia has managed only one victory through four matches. The Dominican Republic, ranked No. 12 in the world, is still searching for its first win of the campaign.

Key Matches Await Fans

Opening day action features several high-profile encounters that could shape the standings moving forward. The United States faces the Dominican Republic in the opening match scheduled at 12 p.m.

Italy then takes on Czechia at 4 p.m. in a showdown between teams carrying identical records. The featured evening match pits unbeaten Japan against Serbia at 8 p.m.

Each nation will play 12 matches during the preliminary phase, with the top eight teams advancing to the finals in Macau. Every result becomes increasingly important as teams battle for qualification.

The Philippine stop hosts Pool 5 during Week 2 of the competition. Other host nations for this year’s VNL include Canada, Brazil, China, Türkiye, Thailand, Serbia, Hong Kong, and Japan.

Asia is represented by three teams in the 18-nation field. China enters Week 2 with a 3-1 record, while Thailand continues its search for a breakthrough victory after dropping its first four matches.

The return of elite women’s international volleyball gives local fans an opportunity to witness some of the world’s best players compete live. It also marks the first time in four years that the Women’s Volleyball Nations League is being staged in the Philippines.
