Alas Pilipinas suffered a major setback in its AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup campaign after falling to South Korea in straight sets on Tuesday, June 9, at the Candon City Arena. The defeat left the Filipinas with a slim path to the semifinals as the tournament entered its crucial stage.
South Korea remained unbeaten in the competition with a convincing 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 victory. The Koreans improved their record with a third consecutive straight-set triumph, strengthening their position in Pool A.

Alas Pilipinas struggled to keep pace with the disciplined Korean attack throughout most of the match. Despite showing resilience in the third set, the home squad was unable to force an extension and absorbed its second loss in four matches.
The defeat placed additional pressure on Alas Pilipinas heading into its final pool-stage assignment. The team now needs favorable results elsewhere while taking care of its own business to keep its semifinal hopes alive.
Korea maintains dominance
Sohwi Kang led South Korea with 19 points built on 15 attacks and three service aces. Her consistent scoring helped the Koreans maintain control of the match and neutralize several comeback attempts by the Filipinas.
Juah Lee added 12 points and anchored the Korean defense with five blocks. Hyunsoo Na also finished with 12 points, contributing both through attacks and service pressure.
South Korea’s balanced offense and strong net defense proved difficult for Alas Pilipinas to overcome. The Koreans recorded seven blocks in the match and consistently disrupted the Filipinas’ attacking rhythm.
The victory kept South Korea among the leading contenders for a semifinal berth. Their unbeaten run has established them as one of the strongest teams in the tournament.
Semifinal hopes remain alive
Thea Gagate paced Alas Pilipinas with nine points, combining effective attacks with strong net defense. Nina Ytang followed with eight points, while team captain Alyssa Valdez and Alyssa Solomon each contributed seven markers.
Despite the loss, the Filipinas remain mathematically alive in the race for the semifinals. However, their chances now depend heavily on both their remaining result and the outcomes of other matches in Pool A.
Chinese Taipei improved to 3-0 after defeating Uzbekistan in straight sets, further complicating the situation for the host nation. Australia also remained in contention and had an opportunity to improve its standing against Kyrgyzstan.
Valdez emphasized that the team will continue to fight despite the difficult circumstances. She said the squad has learned valuable lessons throughout the tournament and remains determined to compete with everything it has.
As the AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup continues, Alas Pilipinas faces a must-win situation while hoping other results fall in its favor. The road ahead has become more challenging, but the Filipinas remain focused on keeping their campaign alive.
