Meralco seized control at a crucial turning point and turned it into an 87-76 victory over TNT in Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals on Friday, May 22, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena to level the series at one game apiece. The Bolts responded strongly after dropping Game 1 and used a decisive fourth-quarter push to secure the win.
Chris Newsome led Meralco with 24 points, including a dominant 15-point outburst in the final quarter that helped break the game open. Marvin Jones also provided steady production in key stretches as Meralco maintained composure in a tightly contested matchup.

The game shifted early when TNT import Bol Manute Bol suffered an injury late in the first quarter, forcing him out of the contest and significantly reducing TNT’s interior presence. His absence changed the flow of the game as Meralco gradually gained control in the paint and on transition.
All Even
Newsome anchored Meralco’s closing run as the Bolts executed crucial possessions to pull away in the final minutes and secure the victory. His leadership down the stretch allowed Meralco to maintain control under pressure.
Jones finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds despite a difficult shooting night, while Javee Mocon added 16 points and provided stability during Meralco’s early offensive rhythm. Their combined effort helped sustain the team before the late-game surge.
TNT leaned on Roger Pogoy, who finished with 27 points, and Calvin Oftana, who contributed 22 points and nine rebounds to keep the Tropang 5G competitive for most of the game. Their scoring efforts kept TNT within striking distance until the final quarter.
However, the absence of Bol’s inside presence became more apparent as the game progressed, allowing Meralco to dictate tempo and control key possessions late. The Bolts capitalized on this advantage to complete the turnaround.

Bol injury costly
Bol had already produced 10 points and six rebounds before exiting the game and was on pace for another strong performance after his dominant outing in Game 1. His early production had given TNT an inside edge before the injury.
In the series opener, Bol posted 37 points, 11 rebounds, six blocks, and a PBA career-high eight assists, establishing himself as a dominant force in the matchup. His presence had been a major factor in TNT’s Game 1 win.
Initial reports suggested a possible torn Achilles, and TNT management is reportedly considering replacement options ahead of Game 3. The uncertainty surrounding his status adds a major variable to the remainder of the series.
Meralco head coach Luigi Trillo acknowledged the impact of the situation but stressed the importance of focusing on execution and preparation regardless of circumstances. He emphasized that adjustments remain necessary heading into the next game.
The series now shifts into a best-of-five format with momentum evened at 1-1 as attention turns to Game 3 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
