Macau Black Knights refused to let their inaugural PBA campaign fade quietly, delivering a massive 105-98 upset over Phoenix Super LPG that sent shockwaves through the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoff race.

Despite already being out of serious contention, Macau played with urgency and confidence, closing strong in the fourth quarter to secure only its third victory in 12 games. The stunning result severely damaged Phoenix’s hopes of securing a favorable playoff position.

For Phoenix, the defeat could not have come at a worse time as the Fuel Masters now face mounting pressure in the crowded postseason battle.

Macau’s explosive late-game surge crushes Phoenix comeback

After surrendering an early lead and falling behind in the fourth quarter, Macau unleashed a decisive 18-4 run fueled by perimeter shooting that completely shifted momentum.

Jenning Leung spearheaded the rally, draining key triples and a four-point shot to finish with 32 points in one of the most explosive performances of the conference. His clutch shooting proved too much for Phoenix to overcome as Macau regained full control late.

Raymond Cao provided crucial secondary scoring with 23 points, while Phoenix Shackelford and Tony Mitchell added valuable contributions on both ends. Mitchell’s dominant rebounding presence also played a key role in stabilizing Macau throughout Phoenix’s surges.

Coach Marcus Elliott praised his squad’s resilience, emphasizing the team’s strong morale and determination to finish its campaign on a high note.

Phoenix playoff hopes now under serious pressure

Phoenix entered the matchup in position to strengthen its postseason standing but instead fell into a dangerous logjam in the middle of the standings.

The loss dropped the Fuel Masters to 6-5, tying them with TNT and Magnolia while simultaneously securing top-four finishes for both Barangay Ginebra and Rain or Shine.

Kenneth Tuffin and Jonathan Williams delivered strong individual performances for Phoenix, but the team’s inability to execute late proved costly. Defensive breakdowns and offensive stagnation during Macau’s decisive run exposed vulnerabilities at the worst possible moment.

Phoenix now faces an urgent must-win scenario to solidify its playoff hopes, with every remaining game carrying increased importance.

For Macau, the victory serves as a statement that even in a challenging debut season, the Black Knights are capable of disrupting the league’s established order.

Their season may be ending, but Macau ensured its final impression would resonate throughout the playoff race.
