The Siargao Cloud 9 Towers are undergoing a major renovation as the island prepares to host a high-profile international surfing event. The project aims to restore one of the country’s most recognizable landmarks while elevating its status on the global surfing stage.

The Philippine Sports Commission, in partnership with local government units, is leading the redevelopment of the iconic structure. The effort reflects a broader push to strengthen sports tourism and improve facilities for both athletes and visitors.

Officials emphasized that the renovation goes beyond infrastructure, serving as a symbol of recovery and resilience following the devastation caused by Typhoon Odette in 2021.

Siargao Cloud 9 Towers set for world-class upgrade

The redevelopment will transform the Cloud 9 Towers into a modern, multi-level viewing platform designed for international competitions. Plans include a three-storey watchtower that will provide improved vantage points for spectators, media, and event organizers.

The structure will also incorporate sustainable features, including a solar-powered system to support its operations. These upgrades are designed to meet global standards while preserving the cultural and historical significance of the site.

Local leaders highlighted the importance of the tower as a defining symbol of Siargao, noting that it remains a must-visit landmark for tourists and surf enthusiasts alike.

Global surfing event drives tourism and recovery

The renovation comes ahead of the World Surf League QS6000 International Pro scheduled for October 16 to 25. The event marks an upgrade from the annual Siargao International Surfing Cup, offering higher ranking points and increased prize incentives.

Organizers expect the competition to attract top surfers from around the world, boosting international attention on the island. The improved facilities are expected to enhance both the viewing experience and overall event execution.

Beyond the competition, the project supports long-term tourism and economic recovery in the region. It also reinforces Siargao’s standing as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines and a premier destination for water sports.

With construction underway and strong government backing, the Siargao Cloud 9 Towers are set to reclaim their place as a global icon of Philippine surfing.
