Meralco nearly let a dominant performance slip away but did just enough to hold off TNT, securing a 110-106 win in the latest PBA Commissioner’s Cup results at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium Tuesday night, April 7.

The Bolts built a massive early cushion and appeared headed for a comfortable victory. However, the game took a dramatic turn in the fourth quarter as TNT mounted a furious comeback that put Meralco’s composure to the test.

Despite the late scare, Meralco executed in the final moments to preserve the win. The result pushed the Bolts to a 4-1 record, tying them for second place in the standings.

Head coach Luigi Trillo acknowledged the issues that nearly cost them the game, particularly their defensive lapses and the high number of free throws allowed. Those mistakes kept TNT within striking distance throughout the contest.

TNT comeback falls short in dramatic finish

TNT erupted for 35 points in the fourth quarter, erasing most of a double-digit deficit and turning the game into a tight battle in the closing minutes.

With less than a minute remaining, the Tropang 5G trimmed the gap to just two points, threatening to complete a stunning comeback. The momentum had clearly shifted, putting all the pressure on Meralco.

However, a crucial missed opportunity in the final possession prevented TNT from forcing overtime. That late miscue ultimately sealed their fate in what could have been one of the biggest comebacks of the conference.

Cansino, Jones anchor Meralco victory

CJ Cansino delivered in key moments, finishing with 19 points, four rebounds, and four assists to earn Best Player of the Game honors. His composure under pressure played a major role in Meralco’s ability to close out the game.

Marvin Jones led the Bolts with 29 points and 12 rebounds, holding his ground against TNT import Bol Bol. His consistency provided stability even as the game tightened late.

Bol Bol countered with 28 points and 12 rebounds but was unable to deliver in the final possession. TNT’s late push ultimately fell short as they dropped to 2-2 in the standings.

Meralco’s performance highlighted both its potential and its vulnerabilities, showing dominance for three quarters before nearly unraveling in the fourth. Still, the Bolts walked away with what mattered most — another win in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
