Alex Eala wrote her name in Philippine tennis history by becoming the first player from the country to appear in the main draw at Indian Wells. The 20-year-old outlasted Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in a marathon 2-hour, 43-minute match to claim a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 victory, demonstrating her resilience and mental toughness on Saturday, March 7.

The Filipino star was tested early, with Yastremska serving for the match in the 10th game of the third set. Eala responded with three consecutive game wins to close out the contest, showcasing her composure in high-pressure moments. Her triumph also made her the first Filipino to compete in a Tier I/WTA 1000 main draw since the format’s introduction in 1990.

Eala’s methodical approach

Eala credited her focus and mental fortitude as key factors in her breakthrough performance. “I had to really go after all the balls and trust my gut. Mental fortitude was a big part of today’s game,” she said, reflecting on the grueling match. She remained composed throughout the swings in momentum, reminding herself to stay in the match when the score tightened.

The Ukrainian opponent struggled with consistency, committing 15 double faults, including eight in the final set, while Eala kept hers to just four. The disciplined play highlighted Eala’s preparation and tactical awareness against a seasoned WTA competitor. This was Eala’s second career meeting against Gauff’s level of competition, reinforcing her readiness for elite-level tennis.

Next challenge: Coco Gauff

Eala will now face No. 4 seed Coco Gauff in a third-round showdown on Sunday, March 8. The pair previously met in a Dubai quarterfinal last month, where Gauff won decisively, taking just two games. Eala is bracing for another tough challenge, aware of the home crowd advantage and the intensity of facing a top-ranked player.

“I think it’s definitely going to be a tough one,” Eala said. “Coco is an amazing player, and playing at home, I’m expecting a big crowd to rally behind her. But like every match, I’m ready to dig deep and give my best.” The upcoming clash marks a significant milestone for Eala as she continues to establish herself on the WTA Tour.
